Unusual Error

I saw an unusual error in my last game. Opponents 3rd baseman fielded a ground ball and tagged my runner going from second to third. Problem was, he used his glove and the ball was in his bare hand. First time ever seeing that error. Anyone else see a first time message while playing out a game?

I am amazed that somebody thought of this play to put it in the game. I have seen that happen once or twice in my decades of following baseball but think of it: It occurred to the developer(s) to put it in the game in their perpetual quest for reality simulation. Once in a while, it's satisfying to step back and realize how far we have come.

This actually happened to me in a Little League game in 1959. I hit a roller to first, the first baseman (a friend of mine) took the ball out of his glove to fake a throw and tagged me with his empty glove. I continued to first and stood there. The dad umpiring called me out.

"But he didn't tag me with the ball, only his empty glove."

"I called you out."

"You don't know the rules. You shouldn't be an umpire." I refused to move.

My manager came over and escorted me to the bench.

Looking back I haven't changed much in over a half century.

This is one of those times where a post goes perfectly with the poster's avatar.

I played five years in youth (age 13 to 17) baseball. Those umps are almost always volunteers (and we almost always played with just one ump). I pitched the last two years. You see it all as a pitcher or catcher. Some of these guys you might think are literally blind.

THE best ump I ever saw there was a guy named Chuck. He also coached a team in the league, and I know he didn't like me. But not only was he a great ump, that guy had integrity. Remember, we only have one ump. I rounded third on a single and missed the bag by about six inches. But I never hesitated, and scored. The team appealed, and Chuck stated that he thought I nicked the corner. He would have LOVED to call me out.
