Serious Contract Request

Don't know if this is a bug or just a weird anomaly, but I asked my slightly-overpaid, 35-yr-old all-star if he'd be interested in an extension after this season. (Because he posted from Japan, he's only arbitration eligible.) Especially interesting is the fourth year of his requested contract: a player option for $117,300,000. And no, I didn't accidentally type two one's. One hundred-seventeen million, a raise from $96 mil in season three, $68 mil in season 2, and $36 mil in season 2. Current contract, $25.6 mil.

I always switch the final year to team option. I've never had a player turn a contract down just based on switching that.

In the situation you're in I wouldn't resign him at all he's going to hit the wall eventually.

Just to clarify, his first-year contract request would make him the highest-paid player in the game. His last year would put his contract in the middle of the pack for team payrolls.

Really weird. Out of interest: what's his greed rating?

A hybrid of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner wouldn't be worth signing at that price! Can you tell us something more about this guy?

YEN or US currency every year pay he wants is ridiculous. Even if he was a Babe Ruth, Tony Gwynn, Ty Cobb, Rickt Henderson, Willy Mays combined and only 22 years old he would still not be worth it.

He'd probably be worth it in that case

I've had that happen a few times. It doesn't bother me much. Just let him take arbitration and his demands before FA will drop back to normal.

His greed rating is High, not surprisingly. I wasn't planning to re-sign him, but when I saw he was arbitration-eligible instead of a free agent, I thought I'd at least ask.

If it's dollars then that's crazy high.. Wow.

But a quick google shows that 100mil Yen is ~900k US.

So maybe his high greed is upping his request higher than the league minimum, but it makes a ton more sense to pay him that than 100mil US. That's insane.

I have nothing to add to this topic, but it won't be long before baseball inflation causes salary to become $300M, just look at Cano, A-Rod, Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera, etc

Are Your financial settings changed so that average salaries would be higher than in modern day?

I don't think so. I signed one of the top free agents last offseason for $17.85M x 7 years (with a team option after 5, player option after 6). Seems like the normal distribution of teams with some money, a few in debt.
