A question of youth vs. Veterans

(AccidentallyI submitted the thread when I wasn't finished)

Considering starting a new game.

Here's the question I want answered: Should I invest in youth, or should I pay for the Vets? Personal preference, I know. I want to either invest my entire budget on youth players or invest on Vets.

Of course I know the positives and negatives of both:

Youth: Cheaper players, more loyal players, must be patient
Veterans: Cost more but produce more quickly.

It's either one or the other. And what team should I pick? Oh - and no picking the Yankees or Astros. I want something in-between.

Edit: I'll pour all my budget every year into youths or vets, but nothing in-between, if you're still wondering why I'm asking this.

Playing for the long term is more fun, IMHO. If I had to make the choice, I'd put my money on Youth.

The Astros actually have a reasonable team in 15. It only took me 3 years to reach the WS with very few moves.

As for youth or veteran I go youth every time and I rarely keep a guy past the age of 30-32 unless he's in a long term contract and I don't renew contracts of anyone past 30. I usually trade them the year the contract runs out.

They might be to top end for you but the Cardinals have a very very good young roster. The Royals too.

Mostly the same for me, especially with pitchers. If you don't diddle with the age modifiers at setup (which I never do), this game has a steep downhill curve after 30. Sure, you may get a couple of good years; but as your player nears 33-34, things start to fall off. Pitchers can't seem to stay healthy for an entire season, middle infielders forget which hand their glove is on, and any speed or power you may have had in your 20s is long forgotten. There is a way to fix this, but it's just easier to keep your team in that golden 27-30 year old range.

Astros are fun to work with, because you have upcoming talent in Singleton and others; but next MLB season, I might just use the Cubs.

To me, it depends more which team you like building. Would you rather pour through the draft, and search through prospect lists to find guys that other teams don't want? Or would you rather troll the free agent market, and find players who can provide you returns within your budget.

Personally, I almost prefer losing. Not because I don't like myself, but if I have a top team that I feel should win every year, I get really sad when they don't. And I make irrational choices, with somewhat violent mood swings, trading away a guy who hit .106 in the playoffs, for example. Yes, it's fun in a different way, but in a lot of cases I'd rather play the young team, because you get the fun when your waiver-wire pitcher ends up going 15-10 on the season, and the joy of finally making the playoffs.

Plus I hate overpaying for players, so if I have the veteran team I know I'm going to have to pay more than they're "worth", so I just get annoyed at that.
