Here's why the Yankees are now Tankees.

Anybody who wants to know why the Yankees are below .500 now need only look at today's boxed box score below. Those four guys, the "heart" of the batting order, and one other guy who was having his left knee drained: Teixeira. He's batting .239 when he is in the lineup, which is seldom.

Just getting this off my chest. I am not one of those "typical Yankee fans" who are spoiled by all the success of the past and cannot stand some adversity. Hey, I can take it and I will still be a Yankees fan even if they end up in last place. I do feel badly, however, and this is therapy for me.

And, NO, I don't want A-Rod back and have not since he left. Not that we have much choice because he will be back next season. Probably batting .239 and getting his knee drained.

And, YES, dammit, I miss Cano. His bat, not the man himself.

Good question - see the highlighted sentence. He's not doing badly, but he's not enough firepower to make up for the other guys. Still, I'd be playing his a** everyday in these circumstances. Then again, I was not contacted by Cashman when Torre was let go . . .

As a Braves fan, I was not displeased to see McCann leave the team. He was an above average hitter and a even better for a catcher. But the last two seasons you could see that catching every day was having an impact on his body.
I wish the best for him, but I have a feeling that the contract the Yankees gave him will end up being a very bad one

Especially since John Ryan Murphy was batting .286 when they sent him down to AAA to make room for Cervelli (who will probably hurt himself again soon, so look for JR again).

And yet they are only 4½ games out of first place...

Having four/five teams in the league's arguably toughest division beating each other up might be one reason

The Yankees can still luck themselves to the division title this year.

The last week or so, I saw three Blue Jays games (being located in Europe and being force-fed day games leads to that; haven't seen my Mets in almost two weeks), and they have zero offense either unless they happen to hit one out.

The Rays are pathetic unless it's Price day. Haven't seen much of the Red Sox or the Orioles this year, but I still see the Yankees drifting back to the top. (Not that that is on my wish list....... )

Fewest wins since 1996 for the AL East Division-winning team:

87, New York Yankees (2000)
92, New York Yankees (1996)

I would like to add that having 3/5 of the rotation go down with injury also doesn't help. Nuno hopefully won't be in the rotation too much longer.
With having Tanaka I believe our future is bright, but we will need a big time presence in the middle of the lineup to get there.

Tanaka does offer a bright spot in the future. Solarte is in a prolonged slump, so it seems like he's coming back to earth, but I still have hopes for him. Betances is looking lights out from the bullpen and Robertson is holding his own. Murphy was doing very well from the backup catcher position and I'd like to see more of him.

So, there are some bright youngsters on the team this year, but past mistakes are catching up with them. They need to bolster their farm system and infuse some youth on this team.

True dat. Although, I would suggest that none of these guys was doing that great before they went on the DL. Furthermore, I think the last guy has basically had it. Maybe not, but I got that feeling about him.

True, true. So it's a down year, a rebuilding year. As I said in the OP, I'm not sweating over it. The Yankees will be competitive again soon, if indeed they are the Tankees of 2014.

calling them the Tankees makes no sense, though.

In only two seasons fromm 1996 onwards has the AL East Division been a case of its teams "beating each other up" based on the number of wins by the division-winning club. It doesn't seem to have been a frequent occurrence, so enjoy it while it lasts!
