Angry 2nd try

Article I was forced to write yesterday:

"Are you kidding me??" Clemente Furious

Riding a league high 28 game hitting streak, Pittsburgh rightfielder Roberto Clemente, was puzzled but accepting when the Pirates manager's decided to give him a day off in the series finale against the Expos yesterday. But when he was inserted into the game as a defensive replacement in the top of the 9th with little chance of coming to the plate in the 9th, the logic eluded him. "Hey I'm a team guy, but you need to ask the ##@#@@ AI about that decision !" shouted Clemente as he hopped into his sports car and left the ballpark. He was so steamed he was still wearing his game uniform when he left the parking lot. When asked for comment the AI spoke in code, but none of the media who were present could interpret.

I think it is correct if he didn't come to the plate in that defensive sub game.

It is correct if he didn't get a chance to have an official at bat then it doesn't count.

I think if he would have been up to bat with 2 outs and a runner on if the runner got caught stealing to end the inning it wouldn't count either since the at bat was never completed and he would have been first up the next inning.

If you want to get really technical and go strictly by the MLB rules sac flys and sac bunts, HBP, walks, interference that awards first base aren't credited as at bats. So you could claim they wouldn't count to end a hit streak if a player was only up to bat once (or more) that game and any of those happened. But then again both the media and MLB seem to count hit streaks against plate appearances, now, and not against official at bats so who really knows.

A at bat is only credited when the batter reaches base on a hit, records any out except for a sacrifice, reaches base on an error, or hits into a fielders choice.

Smile Clemente Cools Down

After learning that his hitting streak was still alive, Roberto Clemente promptly went out and got another hit today.
After the game, Clemente addressed the media, " did I say something the other day?" "Actually the mgr and I are on the same page, no complaints, I love playin for that guy."

The rule isn't based upon whether or not you have an at bat. Sac flys will end the streak. A game with only sac flies will be recorded as a hitless game and end a steak.

It is probably plate appearances that trigger it, not at bats.

According to the one source that is never wrong, wikipedia:

Quote:
According to the Official Baseball Rules, such a streak is ended when a player has at least 1 plate appearance and no hits. A streak shall not be terminated if all official plate appearances result in a base on balls, hit by pitch, defensive interference or a sacrifice bunt. The streak shall terminate if the player has a sacrifice fly and no hit.
And going to the official rulebook (Official Rules | MLB.com: Official info)

Quote:
(b) CONSECUTIVE-GAME HITTING STREAKS. A consecutive-game hitting streak shall not be terminated if all of a batter's plate appearances (one or more) in a game result in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or obstruction or a sacrifice bunt. The streak shall terminate if the player has a sacrifice fly and no hit.
A player's individual consecutive-game hitting streak shall be determined by the consecutive games in which such player appears and is not determined by his club's games.
