Annoying PbP Thing...

I don't know why but this drives me crazy...

The PbP should NEVER say a pitcher strikes out the side if more than 3 batters came to the plate that inning.

I jus thad one where the lead-off batter hit a homer and then the next three struck out and the PbP trumpeted that as striking out the side.

Uh, no.

Well, yes and no. He did strike out the side, so to speak, as long as you don't equate that with "three up and three down."

From wikipedia; There is a disagreement as to the exact definition of striking out the side. Some feel a pitcher should be credited with striking out the side when all three outs in the inning were obtained via the strikeout, regardless of what other hitters the pitcher has faced have done. Others, though, believe a pitcher only has "struck out the side" when he has retired 3 batters in succession without allowing anyone to reach base.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. It's not precise, and therefore not imprecise.

Yes, it's one of those strict interpretation versus loose interpretation things.

The game's usage of the phrase doesn't bother me any.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

For what it's worth, I BELIEVE the game only says this if three batters were retired in order via the strikeout. If the inning goes K, K, Single, K, then it won't make mention of it. But if that inning went Single, K, K, K, it'll say he struck out the side.

This is anecdotal, so I could be very, very wrong on this, but it's a hard thing to try to run a test on.

I think that is what happens.

But, where I think it is wrong is that I don't believe I would ever watch a real game and hear an announcer say that if it wasn't 3-up, 3-down.

It will say it with runners reaching base, I can confirm.

Just doesn't bother me, but 100% it will still make mention of it sometimes.

I have honestly heard commentators say "he struck out the side" when it wasn't a 1-2-3 inning... but yeah I guess it just depends on how each person looks at it, its never bothered me either.. I never even gave it a second thought
