OOTP Wiki is back!

Three years ago, the user Layton is my Homeboy started up an OOTP Wiki. However, the domain eventually lapsed and the site is now gone for good.

Until now.

Out of the Park Baseball Wiki

I still need to contact Layton and get the database, so the wiki is empty for now. Until then, feel free to add stuff to the wiki.

My goal for this wiki is to cover everything OOTP-related - not only game information, but dynasties and stories from the forums as well. So if you want information about The Chronicles of Curtis Borkholder, feel free to bring him up! (And then send him back down, of course.)

hey dude, we should get together. I already have a full/self service wiki/mod site in development. mine sits on a dedicated server, not a shared host and as much bandwidth and hard-drive space I can throw at it & I have been looking for a partner in crime so to speak.

...OOTPWiki.info requires a passcode to register. That's not exactly good wiki design. Also, Wikia is easier to use because it uses MediaWiki - the same coding Wikipedia uses - for wikicode.

Also, we don't need hard drive space, this is a wiki. And your site is down at the moment, indicating you're already having bandwidth problems as it is.

the passcode to join is ootp, to keep bots away. I have simply yet to announce it to anybody outside the ootp mod area during development

media wiki is severely limited software & being part of the wikia community limits it even more & if you want modders to be able to upload files natively (we even have drag and drop file uploads) you do need hard drive space and full control over the server.

we spent the last 4-5 months researching and trying out all the various services and software, on balance we decided that our own server & a modern software package was the best of all worlds.

Modders don't need to be able to upload files, that's what MediaFire is for.

There can be no compromise in this wiki battle. The only reasonable solution is a fight to the DEATH! Winner gets to host the official OOTP Wiki page.

funny guys, but no public spat from us.

we have very similar visions but our differences are fairly fundamental. we will either work something out or we won't & and the chips fall where they may. whatever happens, I've got nothing but love for those who want to make the OOTP community a better place.

it's not that we are not getting anywhere, it's that there is nowhere to go.

we have spent literally 100's of hours in planning, testing, selecting, testing & developing the website. then when the performance on the paid server wasn't good or flexible enough we custom built our own server, tested various webserver software configurations before we settled on teaching ourselves Microsoft iis. then when the import from the paid server carried over some issues we hand copied each page over to ensure a completely clean installation. we simply are not willing to put all that time and effort aside to go to a service, that while we understand the decision, we rejected for not having enough features, flexibility, control or ownership.

if we end up being the only ones who use our wiki then so be it. we feel that we have have built a better mousetrap and are simply willing to stand behind the work we have done. we have extended an offer to the leadership team & there is really nowhere else for us to go.

nothing personal and no hard feelings, it's just the way it is.

Both bwburke94 and Jazzrack deserve praise for the initiative they've shown. A well-designed online source of materials relevant to OOTP would enhance the experience of many people playing the game.

If the two can work things out so they both can make the contributions to the community they envision, that would be great. It might be that they can come to some understanding about how their two separate sites might supplement ... perhaps even enhance ... each other. They do seem to have in mind somewhat different types of sites after all.

Cooperation and thoughtful division of labor is sometimes more beneficial to a community than is winner-take-all competition.

But no matter what happens, thanks guys.
