AI problem in changing player positions

In OOTP 14 I am playing the 1984 season (not that it matters much).

In reality Brian Downing was a LF. I changed him into the game into a catcher. He has 0 experience in outfield positions, 0 ratings in outfield arm, etc and he has good-to-great ratings as a catcher and experience at the C position. Yet as soon as I ask the AI to complete the lineups/etc. his primary position is changed back to LF. How does the AI "remember" that he was an LF? And his team does have enough outfielders.

(interestingly, I tried moving Downing to other teams. They keep him as a catcher).

Is there any way to solve this other than not giving control to the AI over the rosters? I would like to play with injuries on and leave that part of management to the AI.

(there are other such things going on. Moving Brock - a first baseman - from the Dodgers to the Brewers - results in him "becoming" a catcher even if he has 0 ratings as a catcher, in both experience and field abilities even if the Brewers already have two solid catchers in Ted Simmons and Charlie Moore, yet not that good offensively).

Many thanks if anyone can help. I am sure there is an option to stop the AI from doing these (mostly illogical) "transformations".

I've got it!

If anyone runs into the same problem as me:

Go to League Setup -> Historical -> Historical Progressing Options -> Base Roles and Positions. Select AI Evaluation, not Real Life Stats.

And now you see that it was logical after all and based on your settings. So let's go easy on the old AI. It's dimwitted at times, but it doesn't do anything illogical. It only does what the user tells it to do or the developer programs it to do. So, if you see something screwy, it's either your settings or Markus had a few too many drinks before that coding session.

To echo Charlie Hough, in historical replay mode with real line-up and real transactions, over the course of six complete seasons 1966-1971, I have to say that bench usage, bullpen usage, and AI roster strategy has been nearly flawless. Defensive substitution is still a challenge, but nearly always the right players are used if not exactly the right positions. In the final analysis, anomalies are at a minimum, so kudos to the AI in this mode.
