Time For Change?
So in my fictional game, my team (Minneapolis) has won 6 of the last 7 USBL Championships. Im debating about expanding from 24 to 26 teams and taking over one of the new teams.
If you guys were me, what would you do? Keep with the current team or take over a new franchise? |

I'd keep the current team. There is always a higher standard to obtain. Win as many titles in a row as the 1950s Yankees. Get the Team Home Page Clean Sweep (1st in everything). Get titles from every team in your organization in the same year. Watch your best players enter the HOF under your watch. Win more games than the 2001 Mariners. Have a higher winning percentage than the 1906 Cubs. Try to win a title with a team composed entirely of players you've drafted. There's always a new way to try to beat yourself, or MLB history.

That being said it can really boost you to switch teams.

Just personally, I can never bring myself to switch teams in a league without some outside factor (team relocation, etc.). Just switching teams on a whim feels like I'm betraying my team and the players I worked so hard on developing.

You should switch teams if you no longer enjoy managing the current one.

I like the challenge of taking over a struggling franchise, but once I get deep into a franchise I always get tied to that team and can't bring myself to change. I always want to see if I can mold those high draft picks into all-stars or trade that veteran star for a young prospect. So usually when I'm ready for a change for some reason, I end up starting a new league rather than switching teams in the one I'm playing.

I never found myself switching teams. In the many many years of playing OOTP. I find myself rather just ripping down my current organization and rebuilding that instead of taking over another club.

This is personally one of the reasons I think YOU, as the GM, should have to sign a contract with your team. We can already be fired, but there are no terms for how long we are there for without it. If you signed a contract, you'd then have a personal incentive to test the market after your contract was up and go to the highest bidder. It'd make changing teams in the league a bit more fluid in my opinion.

I managed the same team for 18 seasons (through different platforms, and playing out one season per year), winning the World Series 13 times. It was a huge investment of time and took over half of my life. Maintaining a championship team each year was a fun challenge, plus the mini "rebuildings" I did after years of not winning the WS. In 2008 I posted my first losing season ever, but won the WS in 2010, 11 and 12. It was hard to let go of that league, but I was ready for a new challenge. I created a band new league, took over the worst team in that league, gutted them a bit more and tried to turn them into a champion. Totally new challenges and it's been a great deal of fun (and frustration).

You should switch teams and this time build a franchise without exploiting the AI's stupidity......#1 NO waiver claims allowed (it is best just to turn off waivers altogether)......#2 NO draft pick trading (this is just stupid anyways)......#3 NO trades, except 1 for 1 (no cash allowed), and you need to make sure that the team you are trading with is not screwing themselves with the deal (i.e. trading you their only good second baseman for a good catcher, when they already have a good catcher. It is also a good policy to set trading to favor whatever the opposite of the deal you are wanting to do; i.e. if you are trading a veteran to obtain prospects, set trading to favor prospects. Trading a prospect for a veteran, set it to favor veterans....no need to set it to hard, by the way)......#4 ALL free agent offers and extensions must be evenly loaded (same salary every season and no incentives).....#5 extension offers for youngsters to buy out their arbitration and free agent years must be at least $2 million per season TIMES the length of the contract (assuming default financials; i.e a 4 year contract has to be at least $8 million a year, a 7 year contract has to be at least $14 million).....
Do these things and you will NOT win 10 championships in a row and average 120 wins a season......but you WILL enjoy the times you do manage to make it to the top..... . Last edited by Questdog; 09-23-2013 at 05:16 PM. |

I like what Orcin did in his dynasty, which was to step away from his team for some number of years and let the AI run its course, then step back into the fold with a fresh set of circumstances to deal with.

I have made leagues where I move on as soon as I win a World Series as well as ones that my goal is more long-term and I try to build a dynasty. Often I will make mini-goals within those leagues as well (no trades, free agents only get 1 yr deals, no free agents, get a player to x career wins or the hall of game, etc).
In the end, it's the typical refrain: play however you want. As long as you're staying interested and having fun. |

I like to switch teams.. especially after a World Series ring on my finger. Still haven't won one yet.. going into my 18th season.
![]() Won many with earlier versions of OOTP.. but I'm struggling.. even with the best win % of any team in those 17 seasons combined. Lost game 7 of the World Series last season. ![]() |

I have decided to expand the league to 26 teams and then will take over one of the expansion teams.. However, I won't expand until after 2025 season (currently in off-season following 2024 season).

I have been the GM of the Astros for 15 years now and I am thinking of moving on to another team. I had great success with the astros, winning 2 world series and making it to the ALCS a few times. I am currently in 2028 and just had my first losing season in 12 years. The 6 years prior to this season were all 100 win seasons.
But after this season I looked at job offers and the ASTRONOMICAL Yankees are offering me a job. I would like to take the offer but I would feel kind of bad just leaving the Astros as they start rebuding again. But then again I would probably get fired during one of the rebuilding seasons if I stayed because we would probably suck. Not sure what to do but the Yankees are very enticing. |
