Billy Beane, Seattle Mariners, Year One results
Conducting a research right now, in rebuilding my Seattle Mariners, using the OPS statistic, and I'm pretty happy with my results thus far. at one point we had a 77-66 record and we were about 4 games behind Oakland in the AL West standings with a 27th-ranked player payroll, but as usual, The mariners became the Mariners and gave up midway in September. This offseason I'm going to replace Luke Scott, 1B, who retired after the year and continue to add players with high OPS.
I hired Ron Washington to replace Eric Wedge as I felt like Wedge was a problem that caused us to give up in September. Hopefully Washington will give us the fire needed to make the next step and make the playoffs next year. |

To add to my post, Here are some trades I made before the year began and during the season.
I traded Joe Saunders for Wade Miley. Miley Got me 132 K's for $490,000 while Saunders got 139 Ks for Arizona but cost them $7,000,000. While I did have to give up Hultzen as well for Miley he was worth the number of K's Miley got me. Another trade I did at the beginning of the year was giving up Brandon Maurer(SP) for Jake Arrieta (SP) Arrieta won the K's battle with 133-106. Score. One more pitching trade I made in April was Hisashi Iwakuma for Derek Holland. This year I gave up $6,500,000 and 146 K's in Iwakuma for Derek Holland's 168 K's and $3,200,000 in salary. Not bad at all. |

Check that. Ron Washington decided to retire after he signed the contract. LOL. So I hired Mike Micucci to replace Washington. We'll see how he does. Right now I just need to focus on improving this team.

Try using wOBA for your offensive stats, FIP for your pitchers, and ZR or EFF for your defensive numbers. wOBA better captures a player's offensive contributions because it counts things like SB/CS, GDP etc. It's not just the hitting, but more of an overall snapshot of the player's offensive production.

Example: Bartolo Colon in 2013: 18-6, 2.65 ERA, 3.23 FIP ,but only 117 K in 190.1 IP. On the other hand Ryan Dempster managed 157K in 171 IP, but was slapped around for a 8-9 record, 4.57 ERA, 4.68 FIP. That FIP number is a pretty good number to use to compare pitchers, as it basically looks at that pitchers performance alone, while factoring out things like defense or runs scored by his own team (which can affect W-L record). |

also look at ERA+ and OPS+ , just as an indicator your league has not moved away from what your mind thinks is a good value. with some of the bugs around in the minors i had some year where the average ERA was over 6, so those were useful... even my majors now seem to have moved to being a pitcher league so i have to be happy with lower hitting numbers...

You should shift this to the Dynasty section.
