Agents
I think agents would go a long way in creating realism within OOTP. The relationship between agents and organizations does play a role in negotiations at time. e.g.. Scott Boras and the Phillies. I think a player's ratings combined with those of an agent would go a long way toward realistic contract negotiations. This is an area where FM has it right.

How would it work though? Would you talk straight to the agent? Or would the agent advise the player?
Given, I am not that familiar with how agents work in real life, so pardon me of I sound utterly stupid.

You need to look at how FM models it. You deal directly with the agents. The agents have a list of players they represent, and can even be fired and hired by players. Some agents are tougher negotiators, others have more patience. "Each agents has a personality."

Agents & Free Agent Philosophy & Contract Options
Like the idea - for example, some Teams won't deal with certain agents (ie: Boras) based on personalities - so it would simply be aligning players to an agency and then assigning a persona to that agency.
Re philosophies, I hope it gets more real - I would like to see something like Home Field advantages - lots of examples in play... for example, a Player willing to take a cut to play for a certain team because they are from that area, a Player willing to take a pay-cut to play for a winning team (like a vet looking to go out with a championship) - there are also missing thought processes - the AI is too black & white - ie: like Josh Thompson recently, the player would in OOTP look for a multi-year for top bucks - but in reality, coming off a poor showing, the player shouldn't be getting that - instead, like Josh did, sign a shorter length 1 Year contract hoping to reclaim the magic worthy of a longer multi-year term... that type of thinking is absent... similarly, I find the AI too willing to screw teams on older players - ie: 35 Year Old Pitchers looking at 5+ years for 20 Million... doesn't make sense! I also find that I can make a reasonable trade offer - addressing the other Team's needs extremely well but still often not enough; again, the trade's digress into a straight value equation - a lot of my trades I am trading for needs but what I relinquish worsens the team I am trading with?! Also would like to see No Trade Clauses (think this already exists) but also Limited No-Trade Clauses?! |

Being a big fan of stats only, I'd much rather see a textual based system of evaluating the agents rather than them having ratings. Certainly, they should have hidden ratings, but In the real world they don't rate certain agents on a 1-10 scale. Have a brief text describing how the agent handles his negotiations and let that be what we draw from.

First you'd have to change the financial model in OOTP, because the way it works right now is supply and demand. A league that is healthy financially sees high demands from FA's. A league that isn't, doesn't see high demands.
So just adding agents isn't going to change what players ask for. The entire financial model of supply and demand would have to be redone first. I'm not for or against the idea, but it has to work right if it's going to be added. |
