I started a fictional league, let it run for a bit, then took over the worst team with the worst farm system (and a couple awful contracts that I finally shed). My goal is to build a Cardinals type system that's built on as much homegrown talent as possible. This is the first year I'm going to have some tough decisions to make as far as who gets a spot on the 40-man. As of now there is only room for 3 players, and another one or two guys I can DFA without any worry.

Is there an easy way to get a listing of all the eligible players in my roster Before the draft? i always end up forgetting someone in A ball or on the DL or something

Go to your transactions page and look for anyone in your minor leagues that have a # after their name.

I have lost several good players to the Rule 5 draft and this season I had to release a couple players and take a financial hit on their contracts to put a couple more on the 40 man roster to avoid it. Seriously considering turning the Rule 5 draft off, but that would be cheating in my mind.

thanks. i wouldn't consider that an easy way.. i have missed people because their name is too long and couldn't see the #, because they were assigned to Rookie and i assumed those were all recent players, because they were a DL...
so there is no way to create a filter?

Not that I know of but I am still figuring out where to find everything. As for the Rookie league, I almost never have any eligible players below AA. I also don't care about anyone with a potential below 3 stars so if you have a 4 star guy with a long name just go to his contract page and check if he is eligible.

Not that I know of, my work around is to go to the Rule V draft pool screen and create a view that includes Team names. Then I can just run through and look at my players.

does this work? can you see it before draft day? i did it once, but the guy i added to my 40man was still taken so i didnt think it would work

I personally don't bother protecting anyone below AA unless it's a guy with a super high ceiling that's just developing slowly. And like Snarf054 said, the easiest thing I've found is to look for the # next to names.

i guess i have not been comfortable with how quick OOTP promotes draftees. my players rarely are above AA by the time they are Rule 5 eligible.... i currently have followed AI views this year, and had a college guy drafted last year starting at 3B by May,,,, he is holding his own, but it just look weird to me....

and the issue with checking Rookie league is because this is where recently traded minor leaguers are often assigned...

I too lost some good prospects by not accurately checking the Rule 5 pool.

The best way I have found to keep the guys I want is on draft day go in to the Rule 5 draft pool. I sort the players by their team names (alphabetically). I then check through each of my minor league teams eligible players. You can still move players on to your 40 man on draft day.

I manage all my minors as far as promotions/demotions. Plus if a guy is rule 5 eligible and still in A (or lower), I'm rarely worried about losing them.

HS draftee, non star:

Year 1 in Rookie league
Year 2 in SS A ball
Year 3 in A-
Year 4 in A+

so yeah little risk but still, except if lost season because injury. Where i have had issue is with International Prospect, since i like to see around 18 if they have any potential, and this is when they get assigned to Arizona.

I thought HS draftees have 5 years before they are rule 5 eligible? Either way, I guess one thing I do is rush guys with potential through the lower minor league levels. In my perfect situation a top HS draftee finishes his first season in SS, and gets enough time there where he can start his first full season in A-. Whether or not that's too quick, I'm not sure. I kinda base it on their performance. But that could affect the rest of the things I've said.

On a related note, does the game designate which team is A- and which team is A+? I haven't found anything in game so I made the differentiation on my own but I could have flipped them without knowing.
