Historical combined with fictional
Probably an old topic (I have been looking at old threads) but are there a lot of you out there that play this way with both historical AND fictional players in your leagues? (with those historical players showing up at any point in time?)
If so, are there some settings that you would recommend? (or a quickstart?) |

I'm about the start up a league similar to this. I'd love to read some advice as well.

I feel there are some problems with adding historical players to a fictional world. The issue is how the game generates the ratings for
the historical players. They create a player based on the stats only, which is fine in historical, but not fictional. Say for example I call up a player who hit 300 and had 30 home runs, he will be rated as a 30 home run player who hits .300. What is the problem? Well you will notice a .300 hitter in most fictional games (20+ teams)might have a .310 or .315 rating. They tend most years to hit below the number (depending on your modifier setups of course. I am talking about a more standard modern set up). Home runs ran range from a bit below to around the number listed. As such I find if you do it that way, you have to at least boost the batting average by 10-20 pts, and boost the homers as well to have that player be somewhat as he was in real life. Running is also a problem based on the year selected. A good runner might be rated poorly that season, so you have to adjust the running ratings for good stealers. Another problem will be the fielding ratings, where the real players, especially the further back in history the player is selected, will have very poor ratings compared to the fictional players. These have to b e boosted as well. Same goes for pitchers, but the need for a boost depends on how far back in history they go. try a few, you will see they are generally not cream of the crop pitchers after you import them. As such I made up my own ratings for historical players, adjusted ratings as if they were playing modern ball. I use these for the players I bring in. I was going to start a thread to list all the ratings of the players that I use. If there is enough interest I an start this up. these are my opinions anyway. Basic message, if you import an historical player or players to a fictional game- boost their potential ratings quite a bit in order to make them fit in properly with the league you have. The smaller the league, the less of a boost they will need. Perhaps in a 8-10 teams league, they will need no boost at all, an 80 team league you are going to have to give them a bigger jolt. |

What about their abilities in a 24 team league?
Being still relatively new to the game, I didn't realize any of this. Thank you very much for all of this information, it is really appreciated! |

I'm definitely going to test this out and just see what happens. I'm importing about a thousand historical players from the Spritze database. I've got a pre-league setup to see how they rate with a current 2013 quick start. There's a fantasy draft setup and all the players are imported into the draft, all as 18 year olds. Babe Ruth, for example is rated pretty lowly and is somewhere way down the list of players, although some of his potentials look real bad (some are good) I imagine they'll go up as the database takes into count his real stats.
A couple of players, like Candy Cummings and Addie Joss rank in the top 20 interestingly. Last edited by Elysian Fields; 12-07-2013 at 01:47 PM. |

import them and give me their acutal poential ratings (#to 250) batters: babp, void K, gap ect running and fielding a pitcher his 3 potential ratings, speed bg% ect Then I will list my numbers for those players I use, and you can get an idea of the difference (ps don't pick babe ruth...he's a special case in my system and requires more explanation for his numbers) cheers |

Thank you, sprague, but I'm just going to fire up a fictional quickstart and add a couple of historical rookies as I move along.
