Reserve Clause Questions...

I have zero experience with reserve clause rules, but am thinking about using it for a new league that I'm developing.
1) In this format, when contracts are renewed...are they based on the designated dollar values in the league set-up screen for "average", "star", "fair", etc players?
2) Do contracts go down after a poor year? This would be a different outcome than setting it up to have every player eligible for arbitration every year. I've never seen a contract go down in arbitration.
3) What date are the contracts renewed? Is it at the same time that arbitration hearings would be?
Any other input/warnings from playas with more experience would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I'm curious about this too. I play historical alternate universe in the 1950s but with free agency enabled. I was curious about the reserve clause stuff but wasn't sure if I'd like it so I stuck with free agency.

as far as I understand

yes contracts are based on finance layout. if you have them for yearly historical changes. the base salaries will change

yes players salary can go down

as soon as the season ends I believe, the AI reruns finances on all teams.
test it screenshot your player salary screen at beginning of season, then after playoffs end, when season officialy over. the salaries will be different.

I like this better than a no finance league. Still gives the feeling of money things going on, but no free agency. It allows big market teams to trade for higher salary players, while low markets can't- they will go over budget. Everything else is basically like playing no finances (except draft signings of course if those are on)

I had some time to run a test league for a bit this morning.

The salaries did go up and down based on performance-ish...

I'm still working to find a model with reserve clause rules that involves a cap and forces teams to make some tough financial decisions.

Combining this with trying to also figure out what to do with rosters rules that allow few to zero foreigners has created quite a headache!

I've had success with this, but it depends on exactly you're trying to do and accomplish. I'll explain my setup and then you can see if it will apply for you.

My league is based in US, but I use Canada, Mexico, and USA for players/teams. Basically I'm creating a North American league.

(Just to mention, this is fictional and I always delete the originally created players once my league is setup and fill teams with new players, sometimes more than once)

I set original player creation to only the 3 countries plus Puerto Rico. My % are 45,25,25,5

I set foreigners allowed to 20 based on team nationality. This forces teams to have 5 players from their home country. An added twist I like that simulates a team having local/national talent to help draw fans.

For Amateur draft pool origin I have the same settings.

For international amateur FA's, I bring in players from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Jamaica, Cuba, and Belize to get other North American countries represented. I set them to default 12 per year with % as follows - 22,22,22,22,10,2

I don't allow any International Established FA's or FA's from independent leagues.

This has worked well for me. You just have to play around with the player origin and foreigner % to get them to your personal liking.
