Release Player Before Team Option Exercise

I have a player in Year 1 of a 2 year contract, with the 2nd year being a team option + buyout. If I "choose" to release said player during the middle of Year 1, will I be able to avoid paying him his buyout, or will I be penalized with paying him for all of Year 2 anyways regardless?

Pretty sure you are on the hook for the whole salary. Only about 90% though.
