Modern league pitching ration... What's yours?
So When I mean modern I mean for the 1990's up. In your league what pitching rotation so you prefer? 4 man? 5 man? 6 man?
Why? Why do you prefer that over the other please tell us why that is "better" than the others? I go with 5 man because its easier to manage, they get more rest time then the 4 man. And If one goes down instill have 4 solids left rather than 3. And my ace will get more starts than going with a 6 man. |

I use a 5 man rotation, but I like to skip the 5th starter as often as is possible. I like having number 1 and 2 pitchers with stamina ratings around 17/18 out of 20, so they can get 220+ IP per year.

5-man strict. I think I get better performance if they all stay sharp, plus they have something left for the post-season.

5-man, because 4-man in the modern era would overwork the pitchers, and 6-man takes away a bench spot. The only time I'll switch to a 6-man rotation is during September call-ups, if I have a reliever or two that I want to try out as a starter.

Speaking from experience as someone who has played baseball on a near daily basis in college, any guy that tells you he can't pitch on three days rest is lying to you. I've gone 80+ pitches before and been ready to go with one day rest. I think the current setup is unrealistic, frankly.
Look at C.C Sabathia for the Brewers in 2008. He was pitching on three, sometimes two days rest and he dominated the month of August and September doing that same routine.

Point being -- I think the most realistic setting is high stamina. Normal is ridiculous. I understand why it's the default for MLB purposes, but I don't understand why most MLB managers continue to use this format.

Whether or not those modern-day standards are correct is entirely another issue. |

Plus college does not play nearly enough games as mlb I don't think that is a fair comparison and the hitters in MLB are extremely more tougher than college

The hitters being more difficult is irrelevant. College batters with metal sticks in their hands are far more productive in the NCAA than Major League players are against MLB pitchers. Offense dominates the college game. Pitching dominates the professional game. The batters are not as talented in college, obviously, but neither are the pitchers.

Well, I tried, but I guess this is now a debate about real-life rotation traditions.
For the record, I'm with Mr. Baseball and Wolf. |

Speaking strictly in terms of OOTP, It really depends.
Right now in my online league with the Duluth Danger, I have an overload of starting pitchers and I'm forced to operate under a 5-man rotation to avoid ticking my guys off for not meeting their expectations and to keep their stock-value up (it's a stats-only league). If I move one of them to the bullpen in stats only, their value for trades immediately drops because they don't have numbers as a starter to indicate if they are developing or digressing.
