Lake Monsters: New Beginning, New Era
With the recent black eye Major League Baseball took with all of its famed controversies many fans turned away from baseball entirely. And then there were the fans that remembered the good old days. This group led the charge to create the American Baseball Association. Entering the 2013 new year, Vermont Lake Monsters owner Dennis Clulow had a bad taste in his mouth. He didn't like where his team was going and he didn't like where it had been. It was time for a change. That change would come in the form of a 21 year-old gm, Clay. This is his story.

I'm taking over a team that 65-85 last season. The first thing I notice is some scary contracts for some over priced veteran talent. That will have to be taken care of later as my first order of business is to find a new manager to lead the Lake Monsters into the new era I envision. Luckily for me the ball club already has good personnel. The only people I'm planning to get rid of are the manager and the scouting director. I hired recently fired Ray Edwards. The man has 21 years MLB experience and after looking at his strategy preferences he seemed to be the perfect manager to lead our club. I actually lucked into finding possibly one of the greatest amateur and pro scouts of all-time. Carlos Castro will now be the Vermont Lake Monster's Scouting Director.

Dennis Clulow is a notorious penny pincher. He has given me a tiny budget to work with, which is fine, but the previous GM did a poor job building a farm system. I am left with many players right now who are very over priced and some past their prime, however I do have a few possible future studs wrinkled in here and there but not as many as I'd like. My next task will be player analysis.

State of the Organization Starting Pitching John Bates (32, RHP): Grades out as an ideal 3 or 4 starter on most big league clubs. Very rarely does Bates miss a bat. Huge contract that makes me sick to look at. Bates is owed $70,000,000 over the next four seasons. Emelio Rodriguez (26, LHP): Electric stuff. Heater or off-speed, all his pitches are superior -- hitters can't sit on one pitch. Often shows a lack of command. Wastes too many pitches. Ben Thomas (26, LHP): Projectable back-end starter at best. Gives up tons of home runs. Average stuff, average control, pitches tend to flatten out. Charlie Thomason (21, RHP)- Could develop into a top of the line starter. Upper-level stuff, needs to attack hitters more. Tends to lose confidence. Decent movement on fb, tends to hang off-speed. Quality command. Fernando Rodriguez (22, RHP)- Huge ceiling. Has chance to make starting rotation out of spring training, but we don't want to rush him. Has the potential to be a solid ace or number two starter. He can dominate an at-bat at a time right now, but needs to bring his stuff up a notch if he wants to dominate a whole game. Flashes all-star quality command at times. Will never be a guy to walk many. Josh Peterson (25, RHP)- Likely to crack rotation to start season. Below average pitcher. Ordinary stuff. Minor league journeyman on a contender. Dewey Rich (22, LHP)- Should emerge one day as a top of the rotation pitcher. Nice stuff for young kid, should toss some quality games. Just doesn't have that killer instinct yet. Movement on breaking stuff is well above average. Tends to overthrow in pressure situations, causing fastball to flatten out. Has the sort of control that could give him a long career, rarely walks batters. Will start season in either AA or AAA. Randy Rose (36, RHP)- currently injured, will not be back until May. Solid number 2 starter with great command. Will be traded if not in contention. Bottom Line This rotation is a manager's nightmare. There's some potential, but it seems to be a couple seasons away. A couple crazy contracts that can make any GM want to scream Last edited by aclay1919; 07-29-2013 at 04:45 AM. |

Relief Pitching
Mike Clarkson (32, RHP): owed $12,000,000 over next 2 seasons. Pretty solid, capable of finishing games. A+ movement on all pitches. Can't square anything up on this guy. Marvin Yoder (22, RHP): one quality pitch away from being a starter. Makeup of a big-league anchor. Shut-down guy in late innings. Plus stuff. Great movement. Injury prone. Will make big-league club unless he just collapses in the spring. Wayne Byrne (24, RHP): lacks a quality out pitch. Decent movement. Shown control issues. Paul Carpenter (22, LHP): below average stuff and control. Decent movement at times. Lefty specialist. Miguel Coronado (23, RHP): hard to project big-league success. Decent stuff, but its dead straight. Decent command. Jessie Carney (28, RHP): dominant. A+ stuff. Fastball 97+ w/movement. Hitters don't have a chance. Solid command. Would anchor any bullpen. Arbitration eligible at year's end. Bottom Line Has potential to be a solid bullpen. Especially if we can bridge the gap from the start of the the game to the 7th, 8th, 9th. My ideal catcher for the future of the Lake Monsters is somebody who is solid behind the dish with a strong arm.
Catchers Steve Hughes (22, Bats Left): Struggles with the bat, looks timid at times. No pop. Might be the slowest player in the league. Good arm, average receiving skills. Tom Evans (23, Bats Left): Bad hitter. No plate discipline. Average defender with average arm. Bottom Line We're bad here... |

Corner Infield Positions
Miguel Perez 3B (29, Bats Switch): arbitration eligible after season. Elite offensive player. 40+ home run pop. Low contact rates, won't hit for average. Best tools are his hands. Catches everything his way. Ron Baker 1B (29, Bats Right): arbitration eligible after the season. Above average offensively. Solid contact guy with excellent power. Good eye at plate, will walk a bunch. Terrible defender. Lloyd Ross 1B (24, Bats Switch): .270 hitter, above average pop. Swings at everything. Bad defender. Bottom Line Perez and Baker may soon be trade bait. Both will be in the middle of the lineup to start the season. |

Middle Infield Positions
Howard Bennett 2B (25, Bats Right): Average hitter, good contact. Slightly above average power. Will draw some walks. Decent runner, but won't steal bases. Elton Brandt SS, 1B (25, Bats Right): below average bat. Little pop. Decent eye with potential to improve. Solid defender with plus speed. 10-15 stolen base guy. Bryan Lilly SS, 2B, utility (21, Bats Right): good potential. Scouts love him. Needs to work on his swing. Great raw power and great eye. Sees a ton of pitches. Needs to improve defense. Bottom Line Nothing special, but I like what I see in Bryan Lilly's future. |

Outfield
Anastasio Garcia CF, 2B (26, Bats Left): excellent offensive player. .290/.400/.590 guy. Could hit 40 bombs. Good eye. Slow as a snail. Poor defense. Will either play a corner or 2B for me. I cannot put this guy in center. Reid Cramer OF (26, Bats Left): average contact/streaky at times. Above average plate discipline. Good defender that makes the routine plays consistently. 20 sb guy. Bryan Price LF, RF, CF (23, Bats Left): above average hitter shows moderate contact. Monstrous power with a decent eye. Excellent defender with plus speed. May play CF for me. Edgardo Martinez LF, RF (27, Bats Right): not a good hitter, occasional pop. Cannot hit curveball to save his life. Has decent wheels. Paul Goodwin RF, LF (27, Bats Right): .290 hitter with decent eye. Average defender. Looks like a good bat off the bench for me, we'll see. Bottom Line This is the only area of my team that shows much talent. I may juggle them around position wise because I like to have a stud defensive CF. |

I've received some interest in John Bates, but I think I'm going to wait and see what I can get later in the season. His contract just scares the hell out of me. He will not be on my payroll next year no matter what. I'm working on some minor league prospect player evaluations with Carlos Castro. Those will be available shortly.

Lake Monsters traded John Bates and his huge salary for elite hitting prospect, 2nd baseman Benjamin Decker. This takes $60 million off Vermont's payroll for the next four seasons. They had just activated Randy Rose off the DL and are hoping he can anchor their staff for the 2013 season as they continue to rebuild their system. When asked about the move the Lake Monsters' GM, Clay, said, "Obviously this is a move to set us up for future success. While it might not improve our ball club in the upcoming season, it sets us up to be able to do a lot of different things in the future with the now available payroll. We are very excited about the future of Benjamin Decker. He will likely start out the season in AA, but I look for him to possibly be a big part of the Vermont Lake Monsters' new era."

Top Prospects
Benjamin Decker 2B, Anchorage Legions (A), (19, Bats Left): Future hitting stud. Solid defender with decent speed Dewey Rich SP, Benld Stogies (AA), (22, Throws Left): Castro doesn't think as highly of him as most scouts did in the beginning of my stint here. Still a solid prospect with plus movement and quality control. Ezra Walters CF, Benld Stogies (AA), (20, Bats Right): huge ceiling. Projected to hit for high average with a lot of power, will draw some walks. Andre Macdonald RP, Benld Stogies (AA), (21, Throws Right): can't miss huge bullpen prospect. Should develop excellent stuff even more already has quality control and movement on all pitches. Tomas Vasquez RP, Tomaca Javelins (AAA), (20, Throws Right): great stuff. Average command and control. Probably will get called up to the bigs at some point this season. Thomas Johnston, LF, Benld Stogies (AA), (22, Switch): Projects great contact and power with a plus eye. Excellent defensive left fielder. Average to plus speed. Lake Monsters Take Huge Blow to Bullpen: Carney goes down
With this news, Tomas Vasquez will get the call to the bigs and assume a middle relief role. Mike Clarkson will be handed the closer's job to start the season. |

Opening Day Roster
Starting Rotation 1. Randy Rose (37, RHP): solid pitcher for the top of a rotation. Above average stuff, movement, and control. 2. Emilio Rodriguez (26, LHP): great stuff, average command and control. Tendency to waste pitches. 3. Ben Thomas (26, LHP): good control and command. Gives up a ton of home runs. 4. Charlie Thomason (21, LHP): shows potential. Could grow into a solid big-league pitcher. Pitch count will be monitored. Good movement, flashes great control at times. 5. Fernando Rodriguez (22, RHP): Stuff shows potential. Could develop into 1 or 2 starter. Top notch movement with great command Middle Relief Tomas Vasquez (20, RHP): will develop into rally stopper or closer in bigs. Great strikeout potential with average control. Bart Wright (22, RHP): throws dead straight but has great control. Harvey Griffin (23, RHP): Above average stuff with good movement on his breaking stuff. Subpar control. Paul Carpenter (22, LHP): Will serve mostly as lefty specialist and mop-up reliever. Could see some spot start action due to great stamina. Set-Up Wayne Byrne (25, RHP): good gb%. Great control, keeps the ball down. Marvin Yoder (22, RHP): stuff shows potential, great movement on fastball. Closer Mike Clarkson (32, RHP): movement makes him unhittable. Always around the plate. |
