Signing not possible.

Found an odd occurrence.
I traded a few good players for junk prospects and 1st round picks.

the 2014 draft rolls around, mind you this game is modern starting in 2013 as the Toronto Maple Leafs.
My first pick is Calgary 1st round 3 overall I pick Marko Sakic.
The other guys I get are American or Canadian Sakic is Croatian, I cant sign him.
Where usually it shows a deadline his actually says signing not possible and the only option is to shortlist him.

Is this a glitch/bug or does this have something to do with international players. He is 20 compared to the other 18/19 year old guys.

Bump.

Anyone encountering this problem as well? I did not until my 5th season in.

Signing players of european (or non-american at all) descent is not possible atm.
No info leaked yet when this will be fixed - Jeff seems to be MIA

For some reason, you're unable to sign players from Europe unless they become free agents or they're from the Generic Leagues (ex. U18 leagues). The game seems to lack the ability to give out NHL/CHL/KHL Release Clauses out to young European/Russian players (KHL for Russians). For Russian players, its a bit understandable. For the other countries... not so much.

KHL actually doesn't officially allow NHL release clauses. IRL players usually move there once their contract is over if you look closely at it. Then, of course, there are players who get allowed by their team to sign in the NHL (like Anton Belov for the Oilers, for example, or Valery Nichushkin), but how do you code it in a video game

Investigating it now. In those situations, it's supposed to be allowing the contract to be signed and charging the NHL team the standard IIHF transfer fee - but only in the offseason. It's supposed to work the same way as draft picks signing out of major junior (just a different transfer amount), and the generic leagues shouldn't be differentiated from the other ones (they're set identically in the database), but I have to work through a few different scenarios to see exactly what's going wrong.

Edit: OK, I think this is a combination of 2-3 things: the new system designed to inhibit overseas movement being too zealous when it comes to young players going from Europe to North America; some contract offer interface options not working properly when the player has an existing contract in a league that should allow releases; and a side issue for movement to the CHL leagues: an unrealistic way of determining which Europeans are interested in playing junior in North America (every player has an equal chance of choosing that option, but it should happen at a higher rate for players who have a shot at making the NHL.) I'll submit it as one collective bug to the tracker, so it can be dealt with as a whole. Probably going to need a couple of test builds to work it all out.

In historical mode it´s completly impossible to sign europeans, only computer controlled teams are able to do it.
