How to dump big contract players?
Need some help with getting rid of stupidly big contract players who are way over the hill. I'm the Yankees so clearly I have a few of these guys. No one will trade for them.
What happens if I put them on waivers? Is there any way to pay them off to leave? |

Dear Mr. Cashman,
You still have to pay my clients. Posting the questions on a fake baseball game forum does not change the answer. Best Regards, Mr. Boras |

The best bet is to trade them to a team with unlimited resources, like the Yankees.
Oops. Teams will get more flexible about trading for huge contracts at different points of the year. Try in mid-November, right before Free Agency starts, and then maybe you will get an offer. But, the most likely outcome is that the Dodgers will try to dump overpaid veterans on you. |

One thing you can try is to look at who is on the trading block. Sometimes (not always, not regularly, just occasionally) you can swing a deal for a player on the block that will save you money. If you are trying to move a 10 million dollar guy and some other team will give you a 6 million dollar guy for him, even if you don't need him, you saved 4 million (pro-rated depending on what point of the season you are playing). This is especially helpful if you are trying to trade a guy with a multi-year deal and you can find a single-year contract to trade for.

If I release them, where does the money come from that I pay out? From my extensions fund? My free agency fund? Elsewhere? |

If they're totally useless, then it's tough. The closest I get is to deal them for someone on a slightly less worse deal. So if my guy has 2 years at 20M left, then I will try to deal him for someone equally useless but either on a 1 year deal, or on like a 3 year/10M deal. Overpaid vet for overpaid vet is about all you can try.

My original snarky comment aside, you are probably stuck. The financial engine of the game doesn't really handle the Yankees very well as it can't really comprehend the ability of the RL Yankees to essentially have an endless stream of money. In OOTP, they have a finite budget.
Actually, now that you mention it, playing with the 2013 Yankees might be kind fun (something I would have never imagined in any other version of OOTP). |

Your extensions and free agency "funds" are just projections, not defined pots of money. The game adds up all of your current year player salaries, personnel salaries, scouting expenses, player development expenses, and draft expenses, and subtracts that number from your current year budget and your projected next year budget to come up with the amount you have available to spend for free agents and extensions (basically). All releasing a player does is count all of the rest of his salary as spent right now, rather than paid out over the course of the year. His current year expenses are already factored into the money available for FA. If it's a player with a multi-year contract, I believe you'll pay for the future years out of your cash pool, though I'm not certain.

The 2013 Nats were also an interesting team to take over. Sure, there's lots of young talent, and arms galore, but for year two, the owner wouldn't let me sign any extensions and I basically had to cut about 40 million in payroll just to sign a reserve middle infielder in the 2014 offseason.
Got nothing for Haren (well, draft pick compensation doesn't count), who despite his real-life counterpart, was brilliant for me in 2013. And I didn't want to dump Soriano and his $14M contract because he did save 55 games for me in 2013. Add in that Werth had a no-trade, and it's a fun challenge to find the money. Luckily, I ticked him off enough that he'd take a trade, and I dumped his remaining years at $20M per for a $4M season of Alberto Callaspo. It's fun to play with the numbers and play this as a true sim, instead of just making some "press two buttons" arcade-type trade where you dump your salaries and get good prospects back. Though on RARE occasion, I do think there should be a CPU team that is willing to role the dice, so to speak, when the situation fits them. |

Shop them on the very day that free agents file during the offseason, as that is the day that all teams have the greatest amount of payroll flexibility. That's been my experience, anyway, and I was able to dump all of Crawford, Lackey, Gonzalez, and Ortiz (who had a 5-year deal for some reason in the MLB Quickstart roster, WTF mate?) on that exact day in the year.
Please keep in mind that I am obligated to hope that you utterly and completely fail. Nothing personal, you understand, it's just business. |

Most will refuse assignment so you're stuck with keeping them on the roster or releasing them from the team where you will take a big salary hit. One thing to remember is if you release veteran player and they're popular then you will tak a hit with your fan interest as well.

Very good. A-Rod and Jeter are so useless they don't even have a position rating any more. Quote:
I don't think the fans are worried now, none of them are capable of delivering in AAA let alone the bigs. I'm gutted about Jeter but thats just sentimentality. |

How to dump big contract players?
Yes, but if their popularity is high you will take a hit with your fan interest. If your fan interests drops it will have an negative affect on your market size, lowering it. Lower market size means less revenue and smaller budget.
Also, realistically Jeter, Arod and any other veteran would never accept an assignment to the minors unless it was for rehab. I play with the Yankees in my dynasty as well and years 2013-2018 are challenging as far as bad contracts go and remaining competitive. Jeter's contract expires after 2014 if he does not retire so that's not that big of an issue. He usually retires in year 2013 of my dynasty. I usually retire Mo Rivera at the end of the 2013 myself to parallel reality. He big contract that are problematic are Arod. Sabathia and Teixeira. They take a big ratings hit after 2013 and you're stuck with old, aging, low rated players with big contracts. Not to mention that Cano's contract expires in 2013 and he demands a mult-year deal of at least 6 years at 21M+. His production drops in later years as well. The Yankees are quite a challenge. Their situation with big contracts are a mess!
