Toronto Blue Jays (2013-present)

QUICK LINKS
April 25 - The Doc returns!
April 29 - Sit talks about the Halladay trade

Hi there my name is Derek. I'm new to both the forum and OOTP, so please excuse any mistakes I make. I'm going to be taking over the Toronto Blue Jays from Opening Day 2013 and trying to manage this team to success.

All the settings are default from how the game comes packaged, because I just want to keep it relatively simple. I have no idea how fast or slow this will be, but I'll try to get a sense of it after a week or so (in real time).

Here is my 25-man roster to start the season against the Cleveland Indians:

Starting Rotation
#1: R.A. Dickey
#2: Josh Johnson
#3: Brandon Morrow
#4: Mark Buehrle
#5: Casey Janssen

Bullpen
Steve Delabar
Jeremy Jeffress
Aaron Loup
Darren Oliver
Esmil Rogers
Sergio Santos

Catchers
Starter: J.P. Arencibia
Backup: Henry Blanco

Infielders
1B: Edwin Encarnacion
2B: Emilio Bonifacio
3B: Maicer Izturis
SS: Jose Reyes
Utility: Mark DeRosa
Utility: Andy LaRoche

Outfielders
LF: Melky Cabrera
CF: Colby Rasmus
RF: Jose Bautista
DH: Adam Lind
Utility: Rajai Davis
Utility: Eugenio Velez

Opening Day: Blue Jays squeak past the Indians 4-3

Adam Lind had the game-winning double in the 11th inning, scoring Rajai Davis to give the Blue Jays an epic win to start off the 2013 season. Davis came on as a pinch runner for Encarnacion, who was hit by Smith to lead off the 11th.

The Indians took an early first-inning lead when Santana's sacrifice fly scored Brantley, who had tripled earlier in the game. Lind later tied it up at 1-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd.

In the top of the 3rd, Brantley would hit a 2-run home run to give the visitors a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the 6th, Arencibia would double home Lind, who was hit by a pitch, to cut the deficit to 3-2.

With Bautista and Reyes on base, Lind went down swinging to end the seventh inning, keeping the score at 3-2 Cleveland. And in the bottom of the eighth, Rasmus also struck out to end the inning with Izturis and Bonifacio on the corners.

Cabrera, in the bottom of the ninth, also struck out swinging with runners at the corners, but Arencibia's sacrifice fly scored Bautista to tie the game at 3-3, and send it into extra innings.

Delabar walked two Indians in the tenth inning in to load the bases while only recording two outs, but Santos struck out Stubbs in a ten-pitch at-bat to end the threat.

Bautista Named AL Player of the Week

Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays was named the American League's Player of the Week, as he went 13-for-21 for a .619 batting average to go along with 6 home runs and 13 RBI.

"It's been a real nice week for me, but most importantly the team is winning," said Bautista. His four-game home run streak was snapped, but his six-game hitting streak continues.

Bautista will look to carry his hot form on the road as the Blue Jays play Detroit tomorrow to start a six-game road trip.

Notes: Velez is being placed on waivers as he isn't getting much playing time even off the bench, and is therefore wasting a roster spot; he hasn't been good either the odd times he finds himself on the field. Storey was sent back to Buffalo while Moises Sierra's contract is purchased from double-A New Hampshire.

Editor's Note: Sorry if it seems a little bit bland so far, but I was already in the last week of April when I started posting the dynasty here. Going into detail about past games isn't exactly the easiest thing to do.

Jays' GM: Big changes coming

Blue Jays' general manager Endi Sit made promises to the media that big changes would be coming. "I'm not the one to wait for things to work themselves out. I will force the issue if need be," said Sit. "There are players that aren't playing to the best of their abilities, and there are also areas on the team which we would like to improve. Hopefully we can kill two birds with one stone."

The Blue Jays (9-10) are in Baltimore right now to start a three-game series against the division leading Orioles (11-7). The Jays finish the road trip in New York before heading home to welcome the Red Sox to town. Now would be a great time to make up the 2.5 game deficit between themselves and the Orioles.

The Doc returns!

The Blue Jays have completed a trade with the Phillies that sees fan favourite Roy Halladay, along with Canadian centre fielder Tyson Gillies, return to the Rogers Centre after three full seasons with Philadelphia. Heading the other way will be centre fielder Colby Rasmus and first baseman Edwin Encarnacion.

Rasmus was hitting .139 with one home run on the season. He first joined the Blue Jays in July 2011, and his batting line will end at .210/.272/.376 with 27 HRs and 92 RBIs after 203 games with the franchise.

Meanwhile, Encarnacion has been a mainstay in the lineup so far, and has often batted in the heart of the order. In 20 games, he was batting .247 with 4 HRs and 15 RBIs. Encarnacion also had a 9-game hitting streak that lasted from April 9th to April 19th. In a little over three-and-a-half seasons with Toronto, he posted a .265/.342/.496 batting line with 92 HRs and 254 RBIs over 443 games.

Gillies will be placed on the 40-man roster and assigned to triple-A Buffalo, while Halladay is expected to make the start tomorrow at Yankee Stadium.

Blue Jays' general manager Endi Sit will be holding a press conference next Monday (April 29) in advance of the Boston Red Sox' three-game series.

Sit talks about the Halladay trade

With the Blue Jays having an off-day, general manager Endi Sit held a press conference to talk more about the Roy Halladay trade last week, among other things. Below are some excerpts from the press conference:

What made you decide on trading for Halladay just a few weeks into the season?
Well, on Opening Day, our rotation consisted of R.A. Dickey, Josh [Johnson], Brandon [Morrow], Mark [Buehrle], and Casey [Janssen]. Casey hadn't started in the majors on a regular basis since 2007, but he was stretched out in the spring to give us more flexibility, more options. We always felt that he was a better fit coming out of the bullpen, but breaking camp, Casey at the bottom of the rotation was the result. Since then, we've been looking around for a quality starter to join the team and we're very happy that we could strike a deal with Philly and have Roy back in Toronto.

Talk a little bit about Tyson Gillies, the other player you acquired.
Tyson is a very fast player that covers a lot of ground in the outfield. He's smart enough to let that speed be useful on the basepaths as well. Offensively, we're not expecting him to be the next superstar, but he should turn out to at least be able to hold his own in the big leagues; he's got good gap power. He hasn't had the best start to the season with Lehigh Valley, but Tyson will be joining Buffalo immediately. Aside from that, we're looking forward to seeing the Canadian boy continue to grow and be a part of our team going forward.

Did Colby Rasmus' bad start to the season have any influence in dealing such a promising talent away?
You already said it, Colby is a very promising talent. He had a very respectable rookie season with the Cardinals in 2009, and he followed up that with one-and-a-half very good seasons before we picked him up in July of 2011. Colby's had a full season under his belt here in Toronto, but he never got back to consistent playing at the level he did when he was in St. Louis. In addition to his relatively poor start this year, we decided that maybe a change of scenery would be best for Colby. Philadelphia seems to think that as well; actually, he had a 2-for-5 night yesterday against the Mets so it seems like he's already fitting in there. We wish Colby the best of luck back in the National League and we thank him for his service here in Toronto.

Edwin Encarnacion had a very good season last year, and he had played well leading up to the trade. Why did you decide to part ways with him, and will Adam Lind continue to be the full-time first baseman heading forwards?
To get talent like Roy and Tyson, you've got to give up talent as well. We didn't go into the trade thinking we were going to let Edwin go, but as the dialogue went on, we found out Philly were interested in Edwin. Ryan Howard wasn't doing so well down there and they liked Edwin's power bat. As far as how we will replace him, yeah, Adam has played a bit of first base over the past few weeks. For the time being, it looks like he will be getting a majority of the playing time there, but we're still working on many fronts as I speak. In an ideal world, he would be getting most of his at-bats at DH, but it's something we're going to have to adjust to in the short term until more options are available.

April 2013 in review
  • Brandon Morrow seems to be the only starter who has realized spring training is over. He's pitched 30.0 innings and has an ERA of 3.00 over 5 starts.
  • Those who doubted the manager's decision to name Jeremy Jeffress the closer, let alone including him in the Opening Day roster, will see that in limited action, he has 10 strikeouts in 5.1 innings to go with a 1.69 ERA and 3 saves.
  • Aaron Loup, another reliever who had to fight for his roster spot, has 16 strikeouts in 12 innings. So far, he's 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 3 saves.
  • J.P. Arencibia is your surprised MLB leader in home runs with 12. However, he's also struck out 27 times.
  • Jose Bautista is no slouch either, as he already has 9 home runs on the year. He's gotten on base much more though, thanks to his 16 walks.
  • Jose Reyes has been batting a super .337/.405/.538 so far. He's also stolen 7 bases, but in 12 tries.
  • Finally, Moises Sierra already has 3 home runs in only 42 at-bats since being recalled from Buffalo. He's batting .333 with 3 RBIs, as all three of his home runs have came with no on base.

So I put a lot of effort and really liked this dynasty. Liked the way it was going and the results weren't that bad really. But I just bought OOTP and there were a lot of things I was learning and I used this franchise as a guinea pig. It seems to have come to a point where i figured I'm a month or two in and too late to fix some things I overlooked. Therefore, I'll be ending this and hopefully I'll play a bit solo to understand the game before I start up another Jays' dynasty.

Thanks to those who followed.

Scrap that. I'll just live with what I didn't do in the past and continue on
