SP Recommended Level

Is there a place where the game tells you where a guy should be, like a scout recommendation? I found the player report but that does not appear to have anything for new draftees.

If not, any help would be good......I drafted a fictional 23 year old SP, stamina of 59, 78 rating (out of 80), stuff 56/100, movement 39/40, control 38/71, fastball 76/100, slider 55/86, change 42/87. Current overall rating is 24. Should he go to the rookie team, low A or high A? Also, any feel for how long it would take him to move up to MLB? I don't want to push him but know if he will "develop" in rookie league with that high a rating. Is it better to keep guys lower they can go for development or push them a little in OOTP?

Thank you!

On most of the Transactions and Roster pages, the game will show a green up arrow if it thinks a player is ready for the next level up (or a red down one if it thinks he's not ready for the level he's at).

That said, depending on what else I have in my minors I'd probably end up putting him on either a rookie team or the short-season A team to start with, let him finish the season there, and see where his ratings go from there. As far as his ETA to the majors, it's hard to guess. He's going to have to end up with a higher movement than 40 if he wants to be anything more than a homer machine. You could always do the one level per year like the real MLB teams are generally prone to do (I think, could be wrong), or maybe two levels per year since he's already 23. Don't promote him if he's not getting better though.

The arrows won't appear until the new draftees have played for long enough for the scouting department to "have some more info" on them, or something of that nature. The recommendations also magically vanish every preseason, which is odd.

Generally, with a 23-year-old SP, whose stuff appears developed to that stage, I'd start him in Short-Season A ball and see how he's doing after a month or two. If your rookie league rotation is full of other potential prospects who need the innings as starters, then that's also a factor to consider. If you only have Rookie or Low-A/High-A options, then I'd probably start with Rookie and bump him up to Low-A if he dominates for a month. He should be too advanced for Rookie ball.

Let the AI sort for you (AI set up complete minors) then go through each level and place them up and down from that point.

Thank you for the replies.

What do you primarily look for in improvement (overall rating, or more specific things such as individual pitches/stuff/etc.)? He is basically a 23 right now with potential being 79. Will he jump to 25 this year, 50, 70? Not sure how that works as my first year with this team the starters seemed to only go from 20 to 27 (but I had them in rookie league). What is the norm for highly rated prospects? Does growth come exponentially as you move up through the ranks?

Also, I have several 19-21 year old pitcher my scout classifies as RP's but the OSA says should be starters long-term. My idea has been to let them be SP's for now and see how they develop, then pull them back to RP's down the road if they aren't making strides. Relievers appear to be a dime a dozen (or three) in this game, so my thought has been to see if they can be good starters first. Will that backfire on me down the road in some way I'm not seeing?

I give Control the most weight in promotions, it seems to develop the slowest and without it a pitcher is doomed.

That could be counterproductive if it holds an otherwise improving player back. I agree that control often takes longer but feel it is best to let a young pitcher move up and face better hitters, despite one attribute being low.

All of them count. I've yet to see a low "stuff" guy really succeed. They may not walk many but 2 hits an inning doesn't cut it either.

I give FIP the most weight in promotions (but only because I am too lazy to calculate xFIP for the minors).

In my Astros game, I generally combine stuff, movement, and control into my own overall rating (because I don't understand the game's overalls at all sometimes), and use this for promotions.

Now, playing time, on the other hand, is determined by how much potential you have.

I usually look at the "minor league report" under the team menus. If there is a guy that needs to go up/down or if they "may" be ready for the next level, it'll say so there.
