Sudden drop of performance...... This normal?

Ok so in my fictional league I know of two cases but perhaps many more have escaped my eyes. players with a hight star rating like 4 drop to just one the next year. Is this due to age? For Example this Latest incident happen last night I had a 4 star 36 year old 2nd Baseman who who smashed 32 HR had 111 RBI's, 88 walks and .314 BA. Pretty dang good, all-star caliber season. Well the start of the following season he is now 37 and his star rating drops down to one. What the heck from 4 to 1 in one off season? This normal? I can see due to age he goes from 4 to stars down to 3 and then 3 to 2 and so one and so forth. A gradual thing, but from
4 to 1? That's a bit much.

He's 37 years old. That doesn't seem unrealistic to me.

How much did his individual skill ratings change? Did his power crash? Did his speed plummet? The stars alone don't say much.

That's entirely plausible for a player that age. There are a number of players who age gracefully with declining stats year, but for a certainly equal number there is time in their career when they just don't have "it" anymore.

Bear in mind that a player's skill dropping by one on a 1-10 scale may not seem like that much, but it also really depends on their talent relative to the league. If he drops from an 8 to a 7 and there aren't that many at that level, he should still produce well. But if the majority of your league has somewhere between an 8 and 7 rating, he may have gone from average or above to below average in one year.

I reduced the aging modifiers in my save so these type of guys fade out instead of dropping suddenly. The default settings are better than last year's but I wouldn't say it replicate the real life MLB so you may want to tweak them to your liking if that's what you are looking for.

Since tweaking, I see these guys lose speed and fielding ratings instead of huge drops in batting.

You also could switch to "base OVR on AI evaluation settings" and perhaps favor them to stats if OVR is what you are more concerned about.

Just part of the game. I've had guys drop off a cliff, guys have a steady decline over a few years, and guys still be good players into their late 30's. Just random I guess.

Under League setup - AI Ooptions or the one to the left of that change talent randomness from 100 to a more suitable number. For fictional leagues i use 50 for historical i use 1. Change the batting and pitching aging modifiers from 1.00 to .997 that ws recommended by someone on 11. i have several real players playing until there early to mid 40's.

Sounds like Nap Lajoie. Hit .384 and won the batting title in 1910 at 35. Hit .335 in 1913 at the age of 38, was 11th in the MVP voting. At 39 in 1914 he hit .258 with an OPS+ of 84. Went from 5.3 rWAR to 0.0 in one season.

The end often comes out of nowhere.

If scouting's on, you might need to consider that as the reason.

Yes scouting is on so your saying he might just be scouted as a 1 star player but play like a 3-4 star player?
