OOTP - Classic mode

FM has always been too engrossing for me to play it, even though I always buy it because I love soccer - I just don't know all the rules like I do baseball.

This year FM came out with a "classic" mode and I'm much more into the game than I ever have been.

I was thinking maybe Markus should try that at some point for those (not me) who don't want all the options and want a more simplistic MLB style game.

I think that would get the mogul guys and some folks who just want a more simplistic type game?

Can you not get a more simplistic experience by just turning off some of OOTP's various options and rules settings? The trick there might be to know which rules and options to disable for a more streamlined experience. That's where "difficulty settings" can come in, which would turn or or off numerous rules and options at once so the user doesn't have to figure out on their own which things to disable to make for a simpler game play experience. (The user would always, of course, have the choice to customize their "difficulty level" by going in and turning on or off specific rules/options.)

I think you hit the nail on the head. Not everyone has an iPad and I play iOOTP and it's good for a simplistic fix for baseball simulations, where as the desktop game is the uber feature loaded application. I think a classic mode is a good idea. Me personally, I really enjoy the baseball operations stuff, but I don't really care too much for the financials but I do like seeing my minors, and the customization. My two cents...

I am interested, what does FM 'Classic Mode' remove from the game? I never touched it thus far.

I wonder what could be streamlined in a equivalent for OOTP. Using the more basic minor league system seen back in 6.5 and earlier maybe, so they are just teams and not exactly a league like it is now....

Minor leagues seem to be the thing that really can bog down and overwhelm an OOTP GM.

You don't all the rules? You could become a professional ref.

What makes is it too engrossing for you? Now I think FM is very simplistic, very bare-bones, after playing OOTP for about a year.

I've received numerous requests for help (in tech support) on how to make the game simple. I think it would be great to have something added to the league setup wizard that would enable simple setups. We just need to figure out exactly what to exclude. A common theme has been they don't want anything more than just to manage the games and maybe make trades. So no financial system, no complicated rules, etc. Most of these people either wanted historical leagues or current MLB.

Edit: Somehow I missed what Le Grande Orange wrote.

Basically if you just added a "Classic Button" that would do everything you just mentioned in one click then you would have it!

But without the flexibility. In terms of difficulty settings I think of things like combat flight simulator games, where the user can tailor the degree of difficulty with predefined settings, along with the ability to customize further if they wish.

OOTP shares a lot of the complexity of those games, so it echoing those with similar difficulty settings seems a natural. There'd be some debate about how many levels to have, and what exactly should be in each, but the user having the ability to, with a single click, set the overall difficulty of their experience seems a big help to ease-of-use.

The simplest difficulty to me would basically recreate the Front Page Sports: Baseball Pro level of GM experience.

Never played iOOTP, but I would think that's basically it. Almost a 6.5 mode, if you will.

The complaints I read over at the Mogul forums are that the game is too complicated - some folks just want to start an MLB style game (past or present) and not have to worry about all the different settings.

If you have grown with OOTP like many of us have, the new settings are not that big of a deal, but to new comers just looking to play a simplistic game, OOTP can overwhelm.

Yes, exactly.. go and look at ootp 6.5 and if you had a mode like that, I think it would bring in new customers.

This is the first time I've ever really gotten into FM - and it's because of the "classic" mode.

Options is what makes OOTP what it is. If you remove or disable then then you affect the integrity of the game.

Of you don't like messing with the options you don't have to. The game is pretty good at playing all by itself if you let it.

I am as big a baseball fan as there is..and I am a little intimidated by the entire package, even with using the league creation wizard.

I would never use it, but it would be a fantastic idea.
FM Classic has boosted FM sales this year.

Anything to sell more copies is a good thing.

I think its a good idea. I know several people who stuck with BB mogul because they found ootp overwhelming.
