The United States Baseball Association

Following the suspension of Major League Baseball during the heart Cold War in 1968, 48 year old businessman Howard Anderson vowed promised himself and his family that baseball would be back in the United States before the turn of the century. Fast forward 12 years later and the Eastern Baseball Association was born. The EBA consisted of 24 teams located on the Eastern half of the United States and Canada separated into 6 division of 4 teams. Teams would be placed as far west as Kansas City, with the hopes of expansion into the west in the future.

Then on the 10th birthday on the EBA 33 year old Japanese businessman and San Francisco banker Shosuke Takahashi announced a rival baseball league, the Western Baseball Association. The WBA had the same structure as the EBA, 6 divisions of 4 teams and reached as far East as Minneapolis, which was considered part of EBA territory despite not having a team in Minnesota. Not only would Takahashi enter EBA territory, he would also use some of the same team names in his league that the EBA was using which put more stress on an already strained relationship between the two leagues.

Tensions exploded between the two leagues when, in 1998, Howard Anderson filed a lawsuit claiming trademark infringement against Takahashi and the WBA. Then prior to the 2000 season, an agreement was made between Takahashi and Anderson. The Champion of the WBA and the Champion of the EBA would meet in a 7 game series at the end of the season. The stipulation: first league to 4 United States Baseball Championships gets to keep the conflicting names. Not only would the winner get to keep their names, but loser's league would be absorbed into the other league, leaving one commissioner out in the cold.

After the WBA's Vancouver Titans defeated the EBA's Buffalo Bisons in 7 games in the USBA Championships, Howard Anderson turned to his nephew, Richard "Dick" Anderson to commandeer the Louisville Hooligans and hopefully save his association.
