Note For Next Version - Font/Player Name Issue

Every draft, I have noticed a couple of players with very...odd names being generated. I assume this is a character being assigned the wrong ASCII value somewhere. One example is included in this post.

As I stated in the other thread. Re-import the names database. Should take care of that, if it doesn't let me know. I had this problem on 11 and someone had said my league was corrupt.

I won't be in front of my computer for a number of hours, so I'll ask a potentially dumb question - how do I re-import the names database?

I believe it's under Game Setup>Global Database Functions.

The troubling thing is, this stuff just pops into my mind instantaneously. I mean, the second I read the two posts, the whole scenario came to mind, dialog and all. I am worried about me.

I think it's the effect of too much OOTPB or these forums, or both! I was never like this before I started hanging around here.

Anyway, I don't think I derailed the thread too badly; it seems JMD, who is around tonight, has found the answer to his question.

Indeed. However, this still leaves the question of what to do with previously generated players with freaky names. Does the re-import fix them, or just prevent future name snarls?

Well, I found one of the players (yes, I typed the above paragraph before I looked...it's like I'm live blogging! ), and re-generated his name. I had never noted the "Regenerate Name" option in the Editor before.

It picked a new random name instead of fixing the existing one, but it's better than...THAT.

EDIT - As an aside, I'm pleased that fixing his name does not put an asterisk in his player history. [/actual new version input]

Semi attached to this problem is also when using a version of a OS that is non English based the names are also somewhat off since it uses a different character set.


Would a universal fix to this problem be switching to UTF-8?


I hate to bring up another FM comparison, but I believe FM uses UTF-8 and in some countries like Norway almost every name has a special character and yet I never see character corruption in the generated names.

Now that I look closely as the first screen shot, it almost looks like it generated a Hispanic player and then tried to give him an Icelandic family name. If you look at his name not in his profile but in the editor name field then you can see that it looks like an attempt at an Icelandic name.

While such a thing is not an impossibility I have to wonder if your name file has some errors in it to where it is trying to pair together names that should not go together.
