Question on drafting

When I start a league and draft how many of each position do I need and what happens when draft is over and I need more players? Do I look at the FA?

LOL

No worries, brother. Enjoy the ride. It is really a great game. Take your time with it.

As far as how many players per position...I like to carry 5 outfielders, 6 infielders, 2 catchers, 5 starting pitchers and 7 relievers on all of my teams (I use DH). If I have a team with a strong starting pitching staff I'll carry one less reliever and one more infielder that has good L/R splits for where my starters are weak.

I'm sure other people will soon post what they like their roster make-up to be.

Also, if you are "rebuilding" stay away from free-agents...too expensive. Build through the draft and the waiver wire.

If you are only one or two pieces away from the playoffs go ahead and spend the money on a proven veteran to get you over the top.

Good luck.

This is what I try to carry without the DH.
I will carry 4 OF IF my 4th can play all 3 positions well, they are substancially better than my 5th and I want to get them a ton of PAs.

This is pretty much how I set my rosters up give or take on relievers/infielders. I am a firm believer in trying to build through the draft and trading for prospects. Also make sure you check out the waiver wire. You can sometimes find some good bullpen arms on that. The only time I really go after big name free agents is if I feel I am only one or two pieces missing. Everyone has there own way on building there teams but this is how I prefer building them. I love building a good solid organization from top to bottom. Lol I almost prefer building up an organization that is ranked dead last in prospects and trying to build them up to the #1 farm system than I do trying to win the World Series.
But have fun in figuring out what works best for you. Good Luck.

My preferred makeup is 12 pitchers (5 starters, 1-2 relievers than can pitch multiple innings if needed, minimum 1 lefty, 4-5 "normal" relievers. Then 13 position players (2 catchers, 5 infielders, 4 outfielders, then a utility infielder, and a player that can play both infield and outfield, which usually ends up being 1B/LF).
