Simulation Engine

I'm looking into purchasing iOOTP on my iPhone. I'm an avid Strat-o-Matic player, but SOM appears to be allergic to technology, so I'm looking into other options. What I love about SOM and what keeps me from going full bore into other games is that the SOM simulation engine is completely revealed to players of the game. I'm interested in how the OOTP simulation engine works beyond the blurb given on the webpage. This will basically be the deciding factor in whether or not I purchase the game.

How are the pitcher/batter matchups and defensive plays actually resolved?

Best that I can tell, you don't get to see the inner workings here. You get hints and clues...

Having said THAT, I love playing SOM for my in-person league and I LOVE playing OOTP for my home computer time. They are very different but both rewarding.
