How to get free agent compensations?

Does anyone know how you can make a player who was on your team before who is now a free agent, so they can allow you to receive a draft pick after another team signs him?

Your free agent compensation happens automatically. In the off season, look at the list of free agents, it will tell you which ones are Type A, Type B or nothing.

Just to note: you do not get compensation if you release a player. You have to keep the player on your roster until the free agency period begins.
