I came across a couple of players without photos in the course of my current game. In the OOTP Photos folder, their names were attached to the awful question mark silhouette. They were both "one season wonders", but I think everyone who makes it to the majors deserves to be respected by those oof us who love the game.
One of these is a white player named Earl Jones, born 6/11/1919, who played one season for the St. Louis Browns in 1945. (There is also a black Earl Jones who played one season in the Negro Leagues in 1937, but I could find no photos of him.) The other player is Willie Smith (Willie E. Smith; Willie_E_Smith in OOTP), born 8/27/1967 who pitched for the Cardinals in 1994. Their photos are below. (Note: their are 3 other Willie Smiths, two of whom are Negro Leagues players I cannot find photos for.) |

I have posted before about the multiple Bob Smiths in MLB. But there was one for whom I could not find a photo. This Bob Smith was born in 1907 and played for a number of Negro Leagues teams between 1930 and 1944.

Finally, I have photos for two Negro Leagues players from the 1940s who could turn up in historical games or on minor league teams or in Negro Leagues games. The first is Willie Wells Jr., son and namesake of the well-known NeL shortstop. He ended his career playing for the Memphis Red Sox along side his father in 1948. Both retired after the season ended.
The other player is Sammie Haynes who played for the Kansas City Monarchs from 1943-45 along side Jackie Robinson in 1945. He began his career with the Atlanta Black Crackers in 1939. After his time with the Monarchs, he returned to the Crackers as their manager. Years later he lost his sight and founded a charity to help ex-athletes in need. |
