Bill James Wins Batting Title!

That's it! After all these years, I'm finally convinced that sabermetrics are truth!

(Don't look too closely at the picture.)

That .354 average is more awesome than you think, thanks to park effects.

Also, he was caught stealing 3 times, so basically a wasted season.

I detect some irony here, which is fully in keeping with the original thread intention.

However, in case you are sabermetrically interested in his stats, see below. Me, I stop looking when I get to OBP, SLG, and OPS.

2026 and 2029 are his big years so far. In 2026, he had more homers, more RBI's and a higher OPS but he received higher VORP and WAR ratings this past season.

Well, he must be doing something right because the Mariners have won their division four seasons in a row and took home the trophy in 2027. It's about time he put his theories into practice instead of just being an armchair analyst like the rest of us.

After looking at a couple of those base stealing years I just wonder... what if Bill James had Pete Incaviglia's legs? :P

Message from 1998 Yankees:

Bill James ended up having quite a respectable career!

Essentially done at age 34?!

What's the story there?

Good question. I took a look.

See the screen print; he started tailing off in 2035 and really nosedived in 2036. Look at the currents way under the potentials at this point (only a year and a few months later).

Some guys age faster than others in this game.

Now, I'd like to think he'll start a second career writing learned books about . . . Sabermetrics!

Then again, he did last a hell of a lot longer than the REAL 'Seattle' Bill James:

Surely there was an injury or something else in '35? The man had an obp of .383 in '34 in most of a full season. Certainly he was in decline, but the suddenness of the end seems odd to me. I'd have to dig a little deeper.
