Bullpen Management

I am looking for a setting that will limit my Closer to pitching in save situations only.

I just had a game where he was brought in to pitch the 9th inning with a 10-3 lead. I had a completely rested bullpen due to only needing 2 innings from them on the previous 3 days.

I have looked at the Player Game Strategy screen and I don't see what I need.

Thank you for any assistance!

Having some of the same issues. Look at the following threads:

http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...pearances.html

Might give you some ideas on how to tackle the problem. Reliever usage seems sort of weird to me too, like the AI keeps selecting the same reliever over and over no matter the situation. In the first thread, playing around with the staminas of both the starters and relievers in total modifiers works as Markus suggested. For modern era games, haven't figured out a good setting to get the pitcher appearances to be more in line with real world totals or to force the AI to use the appropriate reliever in the appropriate situation. You might need to consider a combination of stamina settings and overriding the team/coach strategies on how quick of a hook they have, though that might not solve the issue of them calling on the closer in a blowout.

Some questions.

If your team doesn't need a closer for 8-12 days because of losses complete games etc are you ok with him sitting that long?

If you are in the bottom of the 17th inning tied in an away game will you be ok with the AI bringing in a position player to pitch or maybe the next days starter?

Same question up by 5 in the bottom of the 17th.

Be careful what you wish for. Also note that no closer in real life is limited to save situations only

Just ran a couple of test seasons using the 1986 settings (just a random year I pulled), looking at the saves leader. I see what RichW is saying in that it seems like if the closer hasn't worked in a few days, he gets some work. However, I also see in some instances where the closer just worked the previous day or two days ago, and is bought in to pitch 2/3 of an inning in a 9-5 loss. Since I'm simming, I obviously can't tell if there were other alternatives available in the 'pen.

I haven't been playing this game that long but I have yet to figure out bullpen management. As an example, Middle Relievers in the Pitching depth chart screen are numbered 1 to 4 but no matter how I arrange the pitchers I assign to that role the AI picks the same reliever over and over again. Hal Brown of the '59 Orioles had pitched in 53 games by the time the All-Star teams were named in one test season I ran.

this issue has been around for many versions and never seems to go away.
The numbers slots means nothing, as in "no given order"
Though i have not done it yet, try emptying the slots for MR and see what happens.

If you're playing anything but a modern game, at least in this version, you're going to have to adjust the starting pitcher stamina and relief pitcher stamina in the totals section if you want to see relievers get into whatever you consider an acceptable amount of games for the era you're playing in.
