Infield/Outfield Strategy

Ok...this is for all the guys who MANAGE their games day by day like me. 1) How often do u change your fielding strats? ie. bringing the infield in when a runner on third?

2) For those who use them...do u really see a difference in play? ie. shifitng the infield for a pull hitter?

3) The AI does change strats sometimes...do u think the AI makes good decisions on fielding strategy? ie..the AI brings in the 3rd baseman on an obvious bunt attempt?

4) I use them myself...but I sometimes wonder if it really makes a difference in the outcome of a play.

I would like to hear the thoughts of the community on this one.

I think it makes a big difference.

Probably the most common situation is your infield position with a runner on third. With a regular infield position, a ground ball on the infield will nearly always allow the runner on third to score. Conversely, if you have the infield playing in, the runner will usually not be able to advance. Keep in mind though that with the infield in, the chances of ground balls getting past the infield increase significantly. You'll notice that the AI manager hardly ever makes this mistake. Ground balls often result in the computer throwing out the runner at home plate.

Probably the next most common situation is with runners on first or second and the pitcher at bat. If you don't bring the corners in, a sacrifice bunt will usually be successful. With the corners in, there is a reasonable chance that the person fielding the ball will be able to throw out the base runner instead of throwing to first (especially if you selected Hold Runners on the play).

There is another area where I have been negligent but hope to improve this upcoming season. I always forget to guard the lines when runners are on base. I can't count the number of times that I have been burned by this oversight. Batters in OOTP frequently hit balls down the line (as in real life), so don't let this happen to you!
