Era settings question

I'm a little unclear about exactly how the era settings work. I'm setting up a solo fictional league with the same structure as MLB circa 1981 or so, i.e. four six-team divisions.

Do I need to (or should I) adjust the era settings for the modern era, which is what I'm using? Are the default totals in the game designed for 30 team leagues, and are my numbers going to be skewed because I only have 24?

If not, then what good is this Adjusted Totals spreadsheet I got off of BCB?

I just don't want to have a guy hitting 90 HRs because the sim engine thinks I need to end up with a total of 5458 for both leagues, which would be about 227 per team. :-)

EDIT: And yes, I've searched for threads about era settings, but the problem is that this game has generating so much posting that the search reveals too much information. That's the problem, if you want to call it that, with having such an active community. Thanks again.

You'll most likely want to adjust the league totals as the default settings are indeed for the modern era.

The totals themselves are not important, rather it is the ratios.

For instance you could set the league totals to 1000 AB, 260 hits, 50 2B, 6 3B, 26 HR, 91 BB, and 200 K's and would get decent results. Though you'll probably have to adjust the numbers to your liking.

Remember, to have less HR (or any other stat), you need to RAISE the number in the league totals setting. For example, if you want 10% less HR, you'll need to increase your HR by 110% in the league settings.

Also, any change you make to hits will carry over to 2B, 3B, and HR as well.

I just want to make sure I understand correctly.

For example, the Adjusted Totals spreadsheet I got from BCB lists these totals for the 1980 season. (I should probably just use 1981, but...)

Would it be safe to assume that these are probably pretty close to the right ratios? There was no ReadMe with the spreadsheet, and no author is identified. Is there a reliable set of these ratios somewhere? I'm not that picky, I'm not going to adjust them every year, but I'd like to be somewhat close.

Thanks, I'll finish setting up the league and then give it a whirl. One question: How did you come up with the "My Ideal" line? Should that just be my actual totals from 1980 that I want to use as the model?

The "My Ideal" line maybe should best be called, "Your Ideal". Basically it is the intuitive ratios that I (or whoever that uses it)would want, but not the ratios that OOTP uses. So for 26400 hits in 100000, you would have a .264 batting average. For a .264 average, ootp needs approximately 24811 hits for every 100000 ABs.

So if you want to use the exact ratios that occurred in 1980, you would go to the "range totals average ratios" sheet, put in 1980 for the start and end year, then copy them to the ideal line in the "adjusted ootp era settings" sheet and follow the directions there.

How I chose the ratios for my ideal was by just looking at the ratios for the different eras, thinking about what I liked in baseball, and using a blend of the modern era (higher batting average, more doubles) and the golden era (less strikeouts, less homeruns). Looking back, the only thing I might have changed, would be upping the walks just a smidgen, but where it is is about the historical average.

I would suggest more looking at a number of years' ratios than a single year tho as each year might fluctuate more than you might like.
