It's such a strange deal, though. Votto had two years left on his deal.

I guess they were deathly afraid of Votto walking in his FA year. Understandable, but this locks him up for TWELVE YEARS! That's an eternity.

I hope it works out for the Reds. It's good for baseball if it does.

This is the beginning of the TV deal era. I think Votto and the Reds met in the middle of where salaries will be in 5 years.

But if the Dodgers are worth 2 billion based on TV dollars, a top 10-20 player is worth quite a bit.

I'm still in shock. I was so resigned to the 'fact' that he would be gone at some point between now and the end of next season.
Well no more of that. I really don't care who got the better end of this deal. He's a Red, period.

Baseball Prospectus has a great article on this signing. Congrats Reds fans! Not looking forward to seeing how much McCann will cost us.

I agree with Jway, we are about to see baseball contracts have a crazy spike.
Votto's agent should never have let his client sign a deal now. He could of gotten more two years from now after we see how exactly this is going to play out.

Votto's great, but $225 million?

It's very possible that $225m over 10 years will be looked at as a steal by the Reds by the time the contract is over.

I'm happy for Votto and the Reds. Would have loved to see him in a Jays jersey but Cincinnati is a great place to play. A lot of good baseball history in that city for sure.

No 10 yr deal is smart from a management standpoint.

I liked Dave Cameron's comment over at FanGraphs about this deal:

It’s a lot of money, but it’s a lot of money for the right kind of player.

I know I'm late to the party, but I agree. Would have been nice to see him play in Canada, but the Reds are a good organization and it'sa good to see him sign with them as opposed to a big club. The term is long, but hopefully he can have 10 good years
