How you run your franchise?

I hope this is the right place to post but I wanted to get ideas on how people do things when running their team/league.

You probably know I am an Orioles fan. It's in my blood, since the day I came on this earth all I know is Orioles baseball. I am buying this version on it's release day and can't wait to take over the O's.

I do have a few questions about the games that maybe someone can help me.

So I am going to make my owner Steve Biscotti and Cal Ripken my director and scout. Will this affect me finding top players by creating my own scout? I notice there are scouts in the game to hire but I want Cal...Lol. Anyone from Baltimore or a fan of the Orioles would know why.

What are some ideas I could use when it comes to starting my franchise? Any tips or advice?

how do you keep up with every team and player in your affliation?

I am really looking forward to this game, probably more so then any game I have ever played. I just wanted to hear what a few people had to say and maybe can learn to get the best out of my game...

Thanks!
Rob

You won't be hurt by creating your own scout as you can simply go into the editor and give your scout (Cal Ripken) whatever ratings you like. If you feel Ripken should have world-class scouting skills, go ahead and create his ratings to reflect that. It's really up to you!

I don't think it's possible to keep close tabs on EVERYONE in your organization but believe me you will keep eyes on the ones that are the most interesting. You can use the 'shortlistt' feature to keep closer tabs on people and to periodically check in, or you can just take close looks at your minor league reports every week or two.

But as for a general overview, the transaction screen (presuming it hasn't changed in OOTPV13) is a great place to get a good overview of your franchise and to be able to quickly check in on players at all levels. You will probably find yourself spending a lot of time there.

Have fun with it. I'm guessing it's your first OOTP? I've been playing since V5 and even played V2 in the beginning, so it's old hat to me, but I definitely remember the excitement when I was first getting into this game. I think V13 is helping me recapture some of that too with its fresh new look!

I bought version 12 back in early January and am going to get V13. I bought 12 to get a feel for the game and be ready to go at it when the new game comes out. I am really looking forward to the release. I am coming from the world of playing PS3 MLB The Show so this is all a whole new ballgame to me.

Playing the game

I am a Twins fan born and bread so I understand the Oriole fascination! I like to sim my games, set the lineups and rotations and let the game go. I play one game a week and all the playoff games (when I make it). You can get crazy as
You want and really play any way you like. It has all the stats and the community and creator are the best I have ever seen. So just enjoy and ask questions!

I have been playing since OOTP2 but have for the most part found managing the games itself the most fun for me. I look at reports from time to time but I tend to just want to knock games out.

Under manager options change your News Subscriptions to News from your entire Organization and it should give you all the news events for anyone in the O's organization.

I only play as a GM. Always have, and most likely always will. There was one year where I tried to play as a field manager. Many many years ago in v6.5, but I got bored with it, and didn't finish.

I recommend you use the reports. Use shortlists. If you play with the full minor league system, you are going to have a lot of spot fillers. Guys who will not play one bit in the future success of your club. It is up to you really to find a system to pick out the guys ou have pegged as critical to your future success, be it making a difference for your major league club, or use in trades.

As others said, the player shortlist feature is a good idea. I also make it a habit to check in on my minor league affiliate teams every month or so to take a closer look at the players, check the team's strategy, etc (I pretend as the GM that I'm literally making a field visit).

Another way to make keeping track of prospects more manageable is to enable the "ghost players" feature in the league options. This allows you to avoid signing a lot of the "filler" players that Cras talked about, and so the players that you do have will tend to be actual, legit prospects or at least recent draft picks. So for example you might have just 10 players in your Double A club. When that team plays games, the rest of roster will be made up of ghost players -- temporary placeholder players generated just for that game and then automatically deleted.

Be careful when having a small number of players on your minors as the ghost players that fill it really suck and you may notice allot of pitchers dominating your team with allot of 1-2 hit shutouts. It doesn't seem to matter how good the 10 real players are as the ghosts will bring them down or at least they do to my teams.
