Waiver Claim vs Trade Puzzle

A team claims my player on waivers. When I attempt to make a trade the AI team says they can't afford the contract. What gives?

It should be easier to make the trade as I'm likely to take some salary back.

Bump. There's so much whining about financials. How can it be ok to claim a player but not trade for him.

No, it doesn't make sense that an owner would let you claim a player with a huge contract if you're already over budget, but not let you trade for a player that has a small contract.

There could be more consistency in this area.

I agree...I wish as the GM we had more financial freedom, but ultimately putting the team in serious red, would simply result in your firing. As it stands now, there is zero creativity to finances (which a real GM does all the time) and no risk/reward which I feel adds to immersion. I should be able to add salary now, and dump some later.

Doesn't this depend on the owner profile? Some owners will bump the budget and give approvals to certain deals and others will never raise the budget? Pretty sure I had an owner in v8 who raised my budget after I started winning.

I haven't experimented much with v12, I have a "controlling" fiscal owner in my current league... and I've just accepted that my overall team budget will sit at $150m no matter how much I win and how much profit he takes at the end of each year.
