newbie part #2 | Trading & the Minors

OK, one more newbie question to astound, amaze and delight!

As a soccer fan I'm used to two transfer (trading) windows: one over the summer, and one in the first week or so of january. Outside of those two windows, no transfers can take place.

How does this work in baseball (and OOTP12)? Are trades possible at any time of the season?

[update] No, scrap that. Just discovered the appropriate section in the manual!

You can trade all year round in MLB with the following hindrance.
I think I am right about these dates. Hopefully someone who is 100% will confirm or correct.

From the end of the World Series until July 31st you can make any trade the other team will agree to. In the game you have to send/receive money, draft pick, player for the game to process the trade. In real life players have been traded for bats and balls, although I am not sure if that was at the ML level.

From July 31st to the end of the WS players have to clear waivers. This means they are placed on waivers and the rest of the league has an opportunity to take the player without offering you compensation. They get the player and pay the remaining salary due.

This is what I am reading but I think trading is not allowed once the playoffs start. I am not 100%.

Well, I figure, it's a sim, so no harm in just doing it and seeing what happens, right?

So I'm playing as the Orioles (a team I have a fondness for, having visited Baltimore during my travels and falling in love with the place). I moved Brad Bergesen out of the active roster and replaced him with Zach Britton, thinking he looked a better player at that position (remember, I'm a noob, this could be complete rubbish, but seeing as Britton is in the real-life starting lineup I'm thinking he's not a bad player. Mind you, he didn't fare well against the Red Sox last night ..).

Anyway, it all seemed to work. Bergesen is unhappy back with the Norfolk Tides, but well, yeah ... pffft ..

I've got my lineups ready, going to play the first game against Tampa tonight. In real life the O's won this game 4-1. I wonder if I can do better.

So, outside of trades with other MLB teams, can you move players to and from your own affiliated Minors during a season, or are there limits to that as well?

You can move them, there are limits.
Click on a player’s profile, then click "Contract and Status" near the upper left. In the lower right is a box. Look for "Minor League Options. Next to that will be how many years of "Options" they have.
If a player is on the 25 man active roster and is "Optioned" down to the minors for one day then an "Option Year" has been used. This prevents teams from stockpiling players in the minors with no power to get to the majors.
When you try to Demote a player to the minors after their 3rd option year you must place them on "Waivers" first. This allows all the other clubs to take him and place him on their active roster if they want him. If they wish to demote him they must waive him also.
I am sure there is another rule or 2 I am forgetting but this is the main rule effecting demotions.
