The cooperstown league

I wont quit until I get this idea the way that I want it because it is such a good idea that Im sure everyone has tried or would love to. I have tried it three times in the past but found myself tweaking things I didnt like more then concentrating on the season. I now believe I am really ready as I have spent significant time on each roster to see which players really deserve to play for their teams and represent their franchises.

About 120 years of baseball. If the world would end tomorrow what story would be told of the game, and which names and teams would prove to be the best? If every franchise could choose their best player to ever play each position who would be the best? There are so many angles to look at a season like this from, so many questions to be answered. The rules and the game itself have almost not changed at all for 100 years, so comparisions and equality are very real across the generations.

I have revamped the divisions and eliminated franchises that really dont have a chance due mostly to their limited history. Sou four teams will be left out and a reallingment of the existing divisions was created. The teams left out are:
  • Colorado Rockies
  • Tampa Rays
  • San Diego Padres
  • Houston Astros **
**Now the exception here with the Astros is as follows, I will be keeping the Texas Rangers in the league. However this Rangers team will truly be an "All Time Texas" team and the roster will include the best of the Rangers and the Astros through the years. The team will have quite a bit of talent.

**All greats from these teams past should find homes on other teams as most players have played for multiple franchises. The only exception I could find in this was that of Tony Gwynn. With Gwynn I decided to put him on the WEAKEST francise I had that was left, so to me this was the LA Angels who lacked the most talent in my estimation. So Gwyn will join the Angels.

The reallinged divisions

AL EAST
  1. NY Yankees
  2. Boston Red Sox
  3. Toronto Blue Jays
  4. Baltimore Orioles
AL CENTRAL
  1. Cleveland Indians
  2. Detroit Tigers
  3. Chicago White Sox
  4. Minnesota Twins
AL WEST
  1. LA Angels
  2. Seattle Mariners
  3. Oakland Athletics
  4. Texas All Stars
NL EAST
  1. Philadelphia Phillies
  2. New York Mets
  3. Atlanta Braves
  4. Washington Nationals**
NL CENTRAL
  1. Chicago Cubs
  2. St. Louis Caardinals
  3. Pittsburgh Pirates
  4. Cincinnati Reds
NL WEST
  1. LA Dodgers
  2. SF Giants
  3. Kansas City Royals
  4. Milwaukee Brewers
**The Expos will be combined with the history of Washington baseball to create one team.
**All other teams will incude any teams that they used to be before relocating to their cuirrent city. So for example the Braves history inlcudes Boston/Milwaukee and Atlanta.

Trades are turned off for the first season and a balanced schedule is used with division winners and a wild card coming out of each league. Interleague play is alowed and a dynamic storyline will be followed. Injuries are on so teams and their depth will surely come into play. Dynamic stories will also be allowed.

Also some teams have very interesting position battles as many greats are fighting for a starting job. For this reason spring training will be enabled, so we will see who will win the starting job by winning out in the spring.

Also note a player who played with a team for the majority of his career will almost always be with that team, however in some cases players were moved to teams they played for a limited time with, this is the case in order to make the league more competitive. Reggie Jackson is one example. he most likely will be playing for the Angels instead of the Yankees or Athletics who have many more options to fill his spot.

In Depth Team Previews will be next.....

ATLANTA BRAVES

Overall (9969-9973 W-L, 1876 - 2011) - 3 World Championships, 17 Pennants, and 21 Playoff Appearances

Team Home: Turner Field
Manager: Bobby Cox

SPGreg Maddux
SPWarren Spahn
SPTom Glavine
SPPhil Niekro
CLJohn Smoltz

Catcher - Javy Lopez is slated as the main man behind the plate. His Bat is the main reason for his inclusion as Lopez is a clutch hitter with 260 career home runs. Del Crandell will back up Lopez and is an excellent experianced defensive cater.

First Base - Joe Torre is expected to be the starter just ahead of Joe Adcock. Torre can play multiple positions but his ability to help the offense is needed. Torre is a very smart and profesional player. Slugger Bob Horner can also play here.

Second Base - A weakness for this team but Bobby Lowe will try to get the job done. Lowe is a small ball player who played in the early century. Rafael Furcal will help back things up here at shortstop. Jeff Blauser and Marcus Giles are also farther down in the org chart.

Short Stop - Rabbit Marranville has many excited as he is a great average contact hitter from the early days of the Boston Braves. Alot will be expected of Marranville who is a fierce competitor.

Third Base - The field general so to speak has to be Eddie Matthews who will patrol third base. Matthews has 512 career home runs and is one of the most underated hitters at the position.

OutField - One of the very best leadoff men in history, sliding Bobby Hamilton will set the table for the Braves. Hamilton is a terror on the bases and a key component in left field. Dale Murphy will get the job in center field with Andrew Jones always ready as a defensive replacement. Finally Hank Aaron is the main man on this team and the all time leader in RBI. Aaron has a chance to show just how great he is on the biggest stage.

Designated Hitter - This job falls to Chipper Jones who has had a past of injuries so just handeling the bat may be the best thing for him.

Starting Pitching - The Braves do it all with pitching and have a quartet that throws strikes and can out think hitters. Greg Maddux of course is the master of mind pitching and Tom Glavine falls along those same lines. Warren Spahn has won more games then any left hander in history and is a work horse, while Phil Niekro and his knuckleball will round off one of the best staffs of any team.

Closer - John Smoltz may have loved to be a starter, but to help his team the most he will take the job as the closer. Smoltz is great under pressure and should be great in the close games.

Spring position battles
Joe Torre vs Joe Medwick (1B)
Dale Murphy vs Andrew Jones (CF)

Cooperstown Rating

Prediction: 85-77

Quick word with Bobby Cox
"We know we are going to be in a number of low scoring games with our pitching staff. Shoring up our defense and playing fundamental baseball will be the key in a league that is this good"

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

[SIZE=2]Overall (9160-10248 W-L, 1883 - 2011) - 2 World Championships, 7 Pennants, and 13 Playoff Appearances

Team Home: Citizens Bank Park
Manager: Gene Mauch

CMike LieberthalDarren Daulton

OFRichie AshburnCy Williams

SPSteve Carlton
SPGrover Cleveland
SPCurt Schilling
SPRobin Roberts
CLTug McGraw

Catchers - Not the strongest position on the team but the Phils will try to mix the bat of Darren Daulton with the leadership and defensive skill of Mike Lieberthal. It did hurt this position when Bob Boone became part of the Angels roster.

First Base - The modern day power of Ryan Howard is what the middle of this order needs and the big man will take his hacks. Another nice bench element should be John Kruk who is a good contact hitter and a pretty good defender.

Second base - Once again a good mix of offense and defense here. The main man of course is Chase Utley who can play the modern day position better then ever. Manny Trillo however could be an immense key as a middle infield defensive genius; anyone who saw Trillo play would conur.

Shortstop - Jimmy Rollins will likely be the man at the top of the order and his speed and onbase percentage will be key. Rollins is a good contact hitter who will be supported by Larry Bowa who holds his own at the position; Bowa is also a great team leader.

Third Base - Along with Howard the real power will also be coming from Michael Jack Schmidt. Schmidt can be argued as maybe the best third baseman to play in any era and will be the focal point of this offense. Scott Rolen is a much better backup at the position then people realize, the Phillies will be excellent on their defensive infield.

Outfield - A lack of some pop in the outfield but players that know how to win and get on base a ton. Richie Ashburn has all the intangibles that make him special while Chuck Klein and his bat may be an overlooked advanatge. Ed Delahanty will bring old school baseball to the table but Big Ed can hit his way for average with a career mark around .330. Bobby Abreu and Cy Williams are nice men off the bench while Greg Luzinski may not be the most fleet of foot but the "Bull" can hit em a long way.

Designated Hitter - Speaking of hitting em a long way, Dick Allen will take his hacks as the DH switching at times with Ryan Howard. Allen, if his head is on straight has more talent then almost anyone and power rare in anty era. His contribution, or lack there of, will be key.

Starting pitching - This rotation is near the top of anyother. Steve Carlton very well may be the best lefty to ever throw a pitch and the legend of Pete Alexander speaks for itself. Curt Schilling is a big game pitcher as well who will compete with Carlton over the strikeout lead. Robin Roberts is a team leader and no Phillie rotation could exist without him.

Closer - The unpredictable Tug McGraw will take on the task of closing out the tough games in this division. McGraw has a splitter that can fool anyone and nerves of steel a closer needs.

Spring Position Battles
Tug MCGraw vs Mitch Williams (Closer)
Darren Daulton vs Mike Lieberthal (Catcher)

Cooperstown Rating
Offense - C+
Defense - A+
Starting pitching - A-
Bullpen - A-
Prediction - 83-79

Quick word with Gene Mauch
"We will most likely be aggresive on the bases with the type of roster we have. We need to give as many chances to the big bats of Howard and Schmidt as we can."

NEW YORK METS

New York Mets (3754-4086 W-L, 1962 - 2011) - 2 World Championships, 4 Pennants, and 7 Playoff Appearances
Ballpark: Shea Stadium
Manager: Davey Johnson

CMike PiazzaJerry Grote

OFCleon JonesKevin McReynolds
OFDarryl StrawberryMookie Wilson
OFLenny DykstraCliff Floyd
DHGeorge Foster
SPTom Seaver
SPDwight Gooden
SPAl Leiter
SPJerry Koosman
CLJohn Franco

Catchers - The bat of Mike Piazza will be key for this lineup and may be deemed the best ever. The Mets will take the drop in defense behind the plate although the dependable Jerry Grote is there for insurance and a good backstop.

First base - The overall great play of Keith Hernandez will have this position solid for New York. Hernandez is an ideal contact hitter and can save numerous errors in the field. King Kong Dave Kingman is the backup but big Dave will see some time as the team DH.

Second Base - The Mets fought with a number of teams to get the services of Jeff Kent. Kent could get sloppy in defense but his power for the position at the plate will be a huge advantage. Edgardo Alfonzo will be the backup and his slick fielding will be a plus.

Short stop - Jose Reyes and his speed will be in there to create and score runs. Reyes is a dynamic player but needs to stay healthy and stay motivated; his defense can be erratic. For support Bud Harrelson brings a more reserved and safe play at the position.

Third Base - The model of the modern Mets, David Wright is a choice at this position not loved by everyone as it keeps the likes of Ray Knight off the team. Wright needs to fit in and should since he wont be the main man with all its pressures. Howard Johnson is a versatile player here with a nice bat that will help if Wright struggles.

Outfield - Tough as nails Lenny Dykstra joins the Mets and will likely be the spark at the top of the lineup. Dykstra is exactly the type of player you will need in this division. Cleon Jones is a player who plays big when he needs to and could see some platoon at the position with Mookie Wilson and Cliff Floyd. Darryl Strawberry is the star once again on this team and his ability to produce will play a huge part in if the Mets can and will contend.

Designated Hitter - Bypassing the Reds to play with the Mets, George Foster will be leaned on as a fulltime hitter. Foster has stretches where he is a terror at the plate, but his cold streaks can be troubling. Kingman again could be the man here as well.

Starting pitching - The Mets have two top starters that are sure to win alot of games, its what they get after that which could be the key. Doc Gooden in his prime has it all and will be a joy to watch on the mound. He however is not the ace, that title of course belongs to Terrific Tom Seaver who will anchor things with his competetive edge and great stuff. Al Leiter is the hope from the left side, he will be leaned on for results or Ron Darling could get the call. Jerry Koosman is another key man in the mix. Koosman is a winner and should be able to hold his own when called upon.

Closer - John Franco is a fan favorite but that doesnt mean he is the best choice to close out games. Franco will get first dibs and despite his lack of overwhelming talent, the New York native always seems to come through when you need him.

Spring training battles
Ron Darling vs Al Leiter (rotation spot)
George Foster vs Dave Kingman (DH)

Cooperstown Rating
Offense - B-
Defense- C
Starting pitching - B+
Bullpen - C
Prediction - 77-85

Quick word with Davey Johnson
"I think my team works very well under pressure. We should be a team that will fight back when down and win a few in our last atbat."

WASHINGTON NATIONALS

Ball Park: Nationals Park
Manager: Felipe Alou

Overall (4223-4864 W-L, 1901 - 1960) - 1 World Championship, 3 Pennants, and 4 Playoff Appearances

CGary CarterRick Ferrell
1BJoe JudgeAndres Gallaraga

OFLarry WalkerHeinie Manush
OFTim RainesMaquis Grissom
OFRusty StaubMoises Alou
DHSam RiceGoose Goslin
SPWalter Johnson
SPDennis Martinez
SPSteve Rogers
SPBill Lee
CLJeff Reardon

Catchers - Gary Carter is as strong an all around catcher as you will find. Carter will be needed to lead a staff that maybe overwhelmed at times. Rick Ferrell is a great backup who wont demand starter time but is a capable option.

First Base - One of many old time Senator players, Joe Judge is a difrent type of first baseman. He doesnt have the amazing power but is a great average hitter and handles the bat and glove very well. Andres Gallaraga should be an outstanding bat off the bench and the "Cat" is a fan favorite.

Second Base - Bucky Harris is almost a second manager on the field and will be the vocal leader of this team. Many even wonder if manager Alou will go to Harris for advise. Alfonso Soriano is on the roster for his bat and could have a shot to DH from time to time.

Short Stop - The Hall of Fame is home for Joe Cronin who helps make up a very good defensive infield. Cronin of course is also a terror with the bat and has a chance to be one of the best short stops even in this league. Hubie Brooks will fill in when needed, he is a marginal roster player at best.

Third Base - A position battle here but Tim Wallach is the early favorite because he brings a great glove. Behind him are Eddie Yost and Ryan Zimmerman, either one of who should be able to fill in with similar results. Still this position isnt the strongest on the team.

Outfield - The leadoff spot is perfect for Tim Raines who will run and create havoc when he can. Raines should score a ton of runs this year. Larry Walker is a key left handed bat and a native from Canada with a great batting eye. Rusty Staub is the final piece of the puzzle in right field, Staub who is the "original Expo", will try and help the team forget Andre Dawson who is on the Cubs. Marquis Grissom is a great speed man on the bench while Moises Alou and Heinie Manuch will look for time where they can get them.

Designated Hitter - Sam Rice is one of the most overlooked hitters in the history of the game but that should change as he takes the middle of the order for this team. Rice is the complete hitter and will prove his worth no doubt.

Starting pitching - Walter Johnson is out to prove that he is the most dominant pitcher to ever throw and everyone cant wait to see him. Johnson has numerous records in the game and has a number of good release points. El Presedente , Dennis Martinez needs to be at his best as he brings his breaking stuff to the division. Bill Spaceman Lee and Steve Rogers are the two arms that may be in for some trouble for this group, but they are confident pitchers that could impress.

Closer - The job here is betweeen Jeff Reardon and John Wetteland. Both are proven arms and should create one of the better all around bullpens in the league.

Spring Training Battles
John Wetteland vs Jeff Reardon (Closer)
Tim Wallach vs Eddie Yost (3rd base)

Cooperstown Rating
Hitting - B-
Defense - A-
Starting pitching - C

A Quick Word With Felipe Aliou

CHICAGO CUBS

Overall (10258-9711 W-L, 1876 - 2011) - 2 World Championships, 16 Pennants, and 16 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park: Wrigley Field

Manager: Leo Durocher

OFAndre DawsonKiki Cuyler
OFSammy SosaPhil Cavaretta
OFBilly WilliamsAndy Pafko
DHHack Wilson
SPFergie Jenkins
SPMordecai Brown
SPCarlos ZambranoKerry Wood
SPRick Sutcliffe
CLLee Smith

Catcher - Among the best of his era Gabby Hartnett will be the man behind the mask for the Cubs. Hartnett is a durable catcher with an average in his career of .297. Frank Chance is the backup but is on this team to help Leo Durocher manage it, Chance is a smart baseball man.

First Base - A platoon most likely in place here between two Cub legends. Mark Grace will likely see most of the action because of his golden glove, but Grace could be a doubles machine. Cap Anson is a 3000 hit player who will see numerous atbats, including maybe some at DH.

Second Base - This is where Ryne Sandberg resides as one of the best. There are rumors that Sandberg may have to bat leadoff but whereever he plays he will excel. Sandberg is of course also an excellent fielder. Babe Herman is a nice addition as a utility man on the bench who plays very hard.

Short Stop - Mr. Cub takes the shortstop job and Ernie Banks plays the game with a joy like no other. His great clubhouse presense is added to a great eye at the plate and rare power for a middle infielder. Joe Tinker brings a famous glove as the back up and can give Banks a break when needed.

Third Base - Ron Santo just wants to win and lead the Cubs to glory. Santo is a very good defensive third baseman and is the genuine power third baseman every team needs. Stan Hack is a nice corner backup and a hard nosed high average hitter.

Outfield - With all of their history the Cubs have quite the group here. The flamboyance of Sammy Sosa is the huge factor in the middle of the Cubs lineup and chasing a home run title may be a reality. Billy Williams has the most smooth swing anyone has seen and i just fine being out of the spotlight. Andre Dawson loves to hit at Wrigley Field and his allaround Hall of Fame play is just what this team needs to round itself out. Kiki Cuyler is the speed man off the bench and will help in centerfield. Phil Cavaretta and Andy Pafko also are loyal Cub players who can contribute in a pinch.

Designated Hitter - Live big and swing hard. Hack Wilson was alot like Babe Ruth and his prime was almost as good. Wilson is a fine RBI man who has the alltime record in a season and is best suited as the DH. Aramis Ramirez may also make the roster in a similar role.

Starting pitching - Like many teams the top two arms in the rotation are very good. Fergie Jenkins and Mordecai Brown have excellent stuff and will eat up innings like no other duo. After the top two however the Cubs may be a little light, Rick Sutcliffe is far from a Hall of Famer but should be able to hold his own. Finally Kerry Wood and Carlos Zambrano will fight for the last spot; Wood may get a bullpen role however.

Closer - Lee Smith will anchor a good bullpen. Smith is an excellent closer who often is forgotten. Smith has the hard stuff and can intimidate hitter with his presence. Randy Myers will also add depth here.

Spring Training Battles
Mark Grace vs Cap Anson (First base)
Kerry Wood vs Carlos Zambrano (Rotation)

Cooperstown Rating
Hitting - A-

Starting Pitching - C-
Bullpen - A-
Prediction: 88-74

A quick word with Leo Durocher
"Maybe we can get the bleacher bums to hassle the opposing fielders so they could drop some flys and we could win some of these games."

These decisions of what player to put on which team - or even who to put on the roster - are tough and there definitely some arguments could be made ...

For example, Jesse Orosco could challenge John Franco for the Mets' closer job ...

However, I would look at Andre Dawson more as an Expo (or in this case Washington Nationals) than a Cub ... and what about Mark Grace ? I definitely expected him to be in there.

But I'm looking forward to the other rosters, this is a very interesting thing

Oops, I should have read everything ...

"Spring Training Battles

That takes care of the Mark Grace-thing

Yes very tough decisions but thats what makes it fun. I will be using spring training as a guide of who may get the call for opening day in some cases, also I have created a minor league with many of the secondary stars so they can get the call if needed.

As for Dawson yes he played more years in Montreal but he is still beloved in Chicago and had his MVP season there. Also I already gave the Washington club a huge advantage by giving them the Senators history and all its players. The Washington team has a bunch of talent in the outfield already, much more then the Cubs.

And Yes Gracie is playing but will be tested by Anson. Its all about winning too and seeing what teams need more. Thats why it has taken me so long to get this right. =)

Thanks for the input though and hope to hear from you again. Part of the fun is the debates about these teams.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

Overall (10131-9437 W-L, 1882 - 2011) - 10 World Championships, 21 Pennants, and 23 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park: Busch Stadium

Manager: Whitey Herzog

CTim McCarverTed Simmons

3BKen BoyerTerry Pendelton
SSOzzie SmithMarty Marion
OFStan Musial Curt Flood
OFLou BrockWillie McGee
OFJoe MedwickVince Coleman
DHJohnny MizeEnos Slaughter
SPBob Gibson
SPDizzy Dean
SPBill Doak
SPChris Carpenter
CLBruce Sutter

Catchers - Ted Simmons may be the better hitter but Tim McCarver has been deemed the starter due to his leadership ability and also his skill at calling a game. Still both these men will provide a big role for the Cards behind the plate, doing their job and this talented team and not doing too much should be fine.

First Base - King Albert Pujols is the main man here. Pujols finally gets to show how great he is against the best to ever play. Pujols is the big bat in the middle of the lineup and is a team leader. Jim Bottomley is a hall of famer to back up Pujols but Bottomley may not see that much action.

Second base - Possibly the greatest right handed bat to ever play Raja Rogers Hornsby is the man at second. Horsnsby may win the batting title and flirt with .400, also his ability to get on base and score runs will be key to the lineup. Red Schoendiest is there for support and deserves to be on this roster, Red will also help Whitey Herzog mange this ballclub.

Short Stop - The glove of Ozzie Smith should prove vital and save a ton of runs. Smith is the best at his position with the glove and any deficiencies at the plate surely will be tolerated. Marty Marion has a better bat but is the ulility infielder for this team.

Third Base - Any contribution from Ken Boyer will be key. Boyer is a powerful third baseman who just makes this team better. In reserve is Terry Pendleton who everyone knows as a clutch hitter and great clubhouse guy. Pendleton is loved by Herzog and should see much action.

Outfield - The outfield has speed with Lou Brock at the top of the lineup and Curt Flood behind him as a reserve. Joe Medwick will play right field and is a good RBI man as well as dependable with the glove. Then there is Stan Musial who will play left and lead this team. Musial is the heart of the club and so he goes so go the Cardinals. Willie McGee provides more speed on the bench while Enos Slaughter should see some time as well.

Designated Hitter - If Bottomley or Flood dont take this role it will fall to Johnny Mize. Mize has a .312 career average and will make this lineup even better. Mize can fill in at first as well but his bat shouldnt be far out of this everyday lineup.

Starting Pitching - Possibly the best rated starter in the game Bob Gibson will bring his best stuff at the top of this rotation. Gibson when at his best cant be hit, but staying good for a long period of time may be key. Dizzy Dean will bring some comedy to the team but when he takes the mound could be dominant. Bill Doak is said to have quite a spitter and will likely use it as he gets his turns in this division. Doak is a man who knows how to win and gets along well with Dean. The fourth spot will be contested by Chris Carpenter and Joaquin Andujar, both have a good upside.

Closer - Bruce Sutter as the closer just makes this team even better. Sutter can go multiple innings and shutdown the best of the best with his splitfinger pitch. The Cardinals will love making the call to the pen.

Spring Traning Battles
Joaquin Andujar vs Chirs Carpenter (Rotation)
Tim McCarver vs Ted Simmons (Catcher)

Cooperstown rating
Hitting - A

PITTSBURGH PIRATES

Overall (9830-9707 W-L, 1882 - 2011) - 5 World Championships, 9 Pennants, and 14 Playoff Appearances

Catchers - Like many other teams the catcher position isnt the strongest. Tony Pena and Jason Kendall are the two men who get the call here and both should get numerous starts. Both catchers are good with a staff and athletic catchers even if neither of them have much pop at all at the plate.

First Base - Big Willie Stargell will man first base but it is his personality and his big bat that will be needed. Stargell is a natural leader and run producer who was among the best players anywhere in the 70's. As backup Gus Suhr isnt a star, but he doesnt need to be as he will get limited play.

Second Base - Bill Mazeroski will get this position. Maz is one of the best defenders at the position and obviously has a knack for making the big hit. Maz should bat near the bottom of the order but is a Hall of Famer. Johnny Ray has made the roster as a utility infielder with a quik bat and fast feet. Ray brings good energy.

Short stop - Anticipation of seeing the great Honus Wagner at work is an exciting prospect. Wagner by most experts is considered the best short stop ever to play both with the glove and the bat. Wagner could easily post a .350 average and will make a nice DP combination with Mazeroski. Pie Traynor can harly believe he wont be a starter, Traynor is an excellent hitter and will likely be the first name off the bench for Chuck Tanner.

Third Base - Quite a positional battle here to find a starter. Bill Madlock is a great hitter and rarely makes an easy out. Arky Vaughen also is know for his hitting and will make his claim for the starting job. Like at short stop, the Pirates have two good options here, look for a platoon.

Outfield - Roberto Clemente and Ralph Kiner make this outfield among the best in all the league. Kiner and his bat was something to behold and respect as he lead the league in almost all batting stats when he played. Clemente of course had the goldern arm and the legend of his reputation. The other man will be Paul Waner who will use his speed and play great defense in centerfield to make the diffrence. Andy Van Slyke is also in the mix here as is old time player Fred Clarke and we may even see some of Jason Bay.

Designated Hitter - The Cobra is the man here as Dave Parker is a power swinger who is best suited as a DH. Parker will be used here as well as Traynor, but anyway you look at it a great hitter will be filling this spot.

Starting Pitching - A weakness for this team? Babe Adams should be the ace but many wonder if he can carry the load. Doug Drabek also joins the rotation but other then a year or two, Drabek may be in obver his head. Deacon Phillipe may be a key as he brings a rubber arm to the mound. John Candelaria and Bob Friend will fight out for the last spot in the rotation but the Pirates could be a little concerned here.

Closer - The side arm heat of Kent Tekulve will close out games for the Buckos. Tekulve has great control and a finishing pitch that can close out game in a hurry.

CINCINNATI REDS

Overall (9940-9639 W-L, 1882 - 2011) - 5 World Championships, 10 Pennants, and 13 Playoff Appearances

Ball park: Great Amercian Ball Park

Manager: Sparky Anderson

Catchers: Maybe the best combo of catchers any team has. Johnny Bench is the starter of course and brings the complete package as maybe the prototype of his kind. Bench gives the Reds an edge in every game they pay. Ernie Lombardi could start on almost anyother team, but his presense on the roster will only help things.

First Base: The youngest star to start in the CTL is Joey Votto which says alot about his ability. Votto is coming off an MVP season where he flirted with a triple crown, now those albilities will be tested to tbe maximum. Votto also has a good glove while his backup Ted Kluszuski is a power man that can DH at times or pinch hit for power.

Second Base: Joe Morgan will be the legs at the top of the Red Machine and his ability to steal bases and get on base will be key. Morgan is a smart player who can take the extra base and turn the double play quickly. Bid McPhee is the man from the small ball days. this player started in over 2100 games for the team and deserves to be part of this roster. As expected he is an excellent contact hitter.

Short Stop - The depth and talent continues for this Reds team at short stop. Barry Larkin gets the call over Dave Conception because Larkin was such a good hitter and has power at the position. Conception of course will be part of things with his excelllent glove and great personality in the clubhouse. Lark will likely bat at the bottom of the order but is a keen hitter and a mainstay for the Reds for over a decade.

Third Base - The heart of this team along with Bench is here as Pete Rose will play third among other positions. Rose just refuses to lose and comes at things at 110%. At the plate he is a tough out who finds the big hits and scores the big runs, no Reds team would be complete without him. Chirs Sabo is a fringe player on this roster but is a fan favorite and does have more pop in his bat then Rose does.

Outfield - Maybe a little thin here in comparison to other teams but the Reds will field a good group. Vida Pinson played proudly for the Reds for 11 years and had over 200 hits four times. Pinson also had over 300 steals and can play all outfield spots. Eric Davis for a certain time was considered the best player in the game for hi five tool ability. A very quick bat and also someone who could really run, Davis will man center field and will give a boost to the defense as well. Finally Ed Roush is a Hall of Famer with a .323 average so he will be on base alot. Roush is often forgotten when talking about the greats, he wont be after 162 games here. Paul O'Neil will be a good part of this roster for his fire and bat. Ken Griffey Sr isnt as good as his son but can run and field and should help in the late innings. Adam Dunn will also make the roster but he wont see much of the field at all.

Designated Hitter - There has to be a spot on the Reds for Tony Perez. Perez will be asked to drive in runs and he surely will answer the bell. Big Tony is a hitter who can use the entire field and also knows how to win. Dunn may see time here as well as Kluszuski. Perez can fill in at first or third as well.

Starting Pitching: Many very good arms to choose from but maybe not a great arm. Johnny Vander meer brings his deceptive stuff to the rotation and for a time in the 1940' was dominant and literally unhittable. Eppa Rixey is a clear cut Hall of Famer and in truth the ace of this staff. Rixey will have the pressure to perform but can haul long innings and pile up wins. Jim Maloney won 15 games or more 6 times for the Reds and has a career ERA at 3.19, he will also be key in the rotation. For the time being Jose Rijo has the last spot in the rotation due his assortment of pitches at this level. Still three men could very easily see time here, Dolf Luque, Mario Soto and Tom Browning all will be in the mix if needed and if any of the four starters struggle.

Closer: The bullpen is strong and Rawly Eastwick has been chosedn to close things out. The Reds however have other candidates for this and may close by commitee. Rob Dibble is also here as well as Tom Hume and Danny Graves.

Jose Rijo vs many (rotation)

LOS ANGELES DODGERS

Overall (10156-9224 W-L, 1884 - 2011) - 6 World Championships, 22 Pennants, and 26 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park: Dodger Stadium

Manager: Tommy LaSorda

Catchers - Roy Campanella was a few MVP's awards in his past and is the complete package at catcher including a great leader and battery mate. Campy above all is a winner and will rarely make a mistake. Mike Scioscia is another very smart catcher all be it with less talent then Campy. Still Sciosia will be another coach on this team with a great work ethic.

First Base - Gil Hodges had almost a cult follwing back in his time at Brooklyn and the player carried a big bat and a pop in his swing. Hodges could surely play in any era and will be key here. Steve Garvey will also play a role here and for insurance the team is calling on Eric Karros who is a great teamate but of course isnt expected to do much.

Second base - The most courageous player in the history of the game Jackie Robinson was also one of the most exciting. Jackie is an unbelievable base runner and will likely be the catalyst at the top for this team. Steve Sax is the perfect backup and a great baserunner as well who can be used late in games. Sax is a fan favorite.

Short Stop - The class continues for the Dodgers at this position and Pee Wee Reese is the perfect hard nosed player that every team needs. Reese is a perfect teamate and simply does his job while supporting the bigger stars. Maury Wills is another speed demon waiting in the wings, Wills is among the best base stealers in history and can easily give the team a spark when needed.

Third Base - The position is up for grabs as two all stars will battle it out. Pedro Guerrero is a Lasorda favorite and when he is hot he can drive in a ton of runs. Pedro is an excellent clutch hitter. The penguin Ron Cey is no slouch at the plate with men on either and every one remembers how could Cey could be from his World Series performances. An open battle or platoon will be seen here.

Outfield - A modest group gets together in the Dodger outfield lead by the Duke. Duke Snider will be the big bat in this lineup and he has a ton of big game experiance. Zack Wheat may not be known by the causual fan but Wheat will be known quickly by the fans when they see his sweet swing and great defense. Willie Keeler and his bat is a thing of legend and one of the best average hitters of all time will be a major player in the Dodger batting order. A great arm and a power swing and Carl Furillo should be a major factor as well. On the bench is yet another great base runner in Brett Butler while Dixie Walker will be looking for at bats where he can get them.

Designated Hitter - Steve Garvey is the player expected to fill in here although he will obviously get time at first. Garvey can use the entire field and is a perfect line drive hitter for Dodger Stadium. Some rumors also have Maury Wills playing some here to get his legs into entire games.

Starting Pitching - Here is where the Dodgers seperate themselves from most teams. Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale together are a duo that everyone will be trying to avoid. Both stars in their prime were among the best we have ever seen and give the Dodgers a huge advantage. Orel Hershiser is a great arm to have on the staff as well, the bull dog was a very smart pitcher and was as good as anyone in the late 80's. The final spit in the rotation is up for debate, Fernando Mania think that the Mexican phenom is too good to sit while Don Newcombe is another very good answer here. The Dodgers have always been built on pitching and this is what will carry this team as far as it is going to go.

Closer - Eric Gagne had a time where he was unhittable with his special pitch. Gagne cant blow the close games he will be given by this strong staff, and his confidence is a key factor for the big man that will be tested.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

Overall (10462-8977 W-L, 1883 - 2011) - 6 World Championships, 21 Pennants, and 23 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park: At&t Park

Manager: John McGraw

SPChristy Matthewson
SPCarl Hubbell
SPJuan Marichal
SPTim Lincecum
CLRod Beck

Catchers: On an excellent team the catcher position is one that may be overlooked for the Giants. Harry Danning gets the call and will deal with an elite pitching staf. Danning is here to help and hold the fort for the big guns. Benito Santiago is an excellent defensive catcher on the roster who will help when needed.

First Base - Big questions and major competition here. The Giants in truth have 4 men who can start and be stars in this position. Orlando Cepeda and Willie McCovey are of course Hall of Famers but it looks like one of them will take his cuts at DH. Will Clark also will be in the mix as a great competitor and fine glove. Finally, Bill Terry is also a massive talent at the position who will struggle to find innings. Manager John McGraw will have fun moving these pieces around.

Second Base - Larry Doyle knows John McGraw very well and plays the type of ball he likes. Doyle will get on base ahead of the big bats in the order. Doyle will also play a competent second base. Robby Thompson may find room on the roster just as a fill in and someone who is dependable in a pinch.

Third Base - The big bats begin here as Matt Williams will man the hot corner. Williams in his prime was a big a bopper as there was and the 1994 season remains a high point. Williams may be a bit slow of foot but behind him is Freddie Lindstrom who is more then capable of playing the position well. In some corners Lindstrom is actually being prefered over the power of Williams.

Outfield - Simply put, this is the very best outfield in the league. Even the Yankees cant go up against Willie Mays and Barry Bonds playing side by side. Not only are both players star studded defenders, but they obviously combine for over 1300 home runs. Along with these two comes the Hall of Fame persona of Mel Ott. Ott is a more reserved star but his numbers as well are staggering and three of maybe the top 20 hitters to ever play will be manning the outfield in the Bay. Bobby Thompson and his bat will be a nice pinch hitter for this team, and Brett Butler is a strong bunter and base runner added to the mix. Mccovery and Cepeda can also fit in here when needed.

Designated Hitter - The plan initially is to have Orlando Cepeda takes this role. Cepeda is a Hall of Fame hitter who maybe lacks the speed and glove of the others. Still he should see great pitches playing with the other mega stars around him. A number of players can obviously fill in here, including Bill Terry.

Starting Pitching - After the great outfield, one can only get just as excited about the starters. Christy Matthewson has it all on the mound and is widely considered the best to maybe ever throw. Juan Marichal has a rubber arm and great stuff while Carl Hubbell had an outpictch that few in history can matchup against. All all this to the quirky delivery of Tim Lincecum, and this is a rotation second to none. No one will have an easy day against the Giants and the pitching matchups set up especially against the Dodgers should be epic.

Closer - Maybe always lacking to dominant closer, the Giants will look to the shooter Rob Beck to try and be the man late. Beck is dependable but fear is that maybe his fastball will be reached by so many Hall of Fame Hitters.

KANSAS CITY ROYALS

Kansas City Royals (3232-3478 W-L, 1969 - 2011) - 1 World Championship, 2 Pennants, and 7 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park: Royals Stadium

Manager: Dick Howser

1BMike SweeneySteve Balboni
2BFrank WhiteCookie Rojas
3BGeorge BrettKevin Seitzer

OFWillie WilsonBo Jackson
OFDanny TartabullJermaine Dye
OFCarlos BeltranAmos Otis
DHHal McRae
SPBrett Saberhagen
SPKevin Appier
SPDennis Leonard
SPMark GubizaZack Grienke
CLDan Quissenberry

Catchers - The Royals look for stability here and have two men that do things a bit diffrently. Mike Macfarland is a fine defensive backstop with an average bat while Darrel Porter is a big hitter with less on a defensive feel. Both should play, but in the spirit of runs, Porter should have the job going into opening day.

First Base - Everyone looks at first base as a position that can produce some runs. The Royals will look to Mike Sweeney who for a time was one of the best hitters in the American League. Steve Balboni is the big man to back up the injury prone Sweeney, Balboni has a big bat and may also be used some at DH.

Second Base - Frank White is the only choice at second base. White is an agressive hitter who was part of many great Royals teams. White can be inconsistent at times and his concentration needs to be there for the long haul. Cookie Rojas is of course a great clubhouse player and has an excellent glove. Rojas will see time in the infield late in close games.

ShortStop - Freddie Patek was a better hitter then most people give him credit for even though he wasnt part of the great Royal runs. Still he and UL Washington will compete for the position and likely will split time. Some are saying that behind the scenes, UL feels like he definately should be the best man for the job. Competition will tell the story.

Third Base - The greatest Royal of them all resides here as George Brett was the best hitter of a generation. Brett will man third and will have to hit all year long for this team to win enough games. Teams may pitch around the sweet swinger but somehow Brett seems to find a way. Kevin Seitzer is a very underated player who can hit and field the position with results.

Outfield - Willie Wilson will set the table for the Royals and his speed and contact hitting are just what the Royals hope to see. Wilson covers alot of ground in center field as well cutting off extra base hits. Danny Tartabull has some very impressive career numbers and will get the opening call in right field. Tartabull is an all around hitter that needs to help the offense. Finally Carlos Beltran with his all around game should start in left but true competition will come from Amos Otis who may be more consistent. Bo Jackson is also on the roster just for his pure athletic skill. Jermain Dye also made the roster.

Designated Hitter - Hal McRae has this job and no one is going to take it from him. One of the most intense hitters around McRae needs to help George Brett carry some of the load, his keen batting eye is something special.

Starting Pitching - The Royals will go as far as this unit takes them. They have some good arms here but great ones? Bret Saberhagen looks for the form that made him a dominant starter in the mid 80's, he has all the stuff and will be the ace. Kevin Appier throws hard and was a mainstay with this team. Appier needs to keep the ball in the park and strike the sluggers out. Dennis Leonard shouldnt be forgotten as he won 20 games a number of times for the Royals and has excellent control. Mark Gubiza had one outstanding season for the Royals, much like Zack Grienke did; the two of them will battle for the final rotationspot. Some talk of Paul Splittorff has been heard as well.

Closer - Dan Quissenberry and his side arm hard stuff should put a number of batters to bed late. Quiss is one of the best closers any team can hope for and his presence alone makes this team alot stronger.

MILWAUKEE BREWERS

Overall (3190-3528 W-L, 1969 - 2011) - 1 Pennant and 3 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park: Miller Park

Manager: Harvey Kuenn

OFGary SheffieldGorman Thomas
OFBen OgliveSixto Lezcano
DHPrince Fielder
SPTeddy Higuera
SPDon Sutton
SPMike Caldwell
SPBen SheetsMoose Haas
CLRollie Fingers

Catchers - Without an extensive history, like many of the positions the Brewers are looking for stability at catcher. BJ Shuroff is a .282 career hitter and a player that simply does his job well. Dave Nillson will have a real chance to play at this position too, Nilsson have some real pop in his bat even if his glove isnt the best; the dimensions of Miller Park were a natural fit for him.

First Base - The smooth solid swing of Cecil Cooper is remembered by al Brewer fans as are his trademark glasses. Cooper is a clutch hitter who hit .298 in his career including one season over .350. Cecil Fielder can play here as well but his big swing is slated for DH. Another big bat that may make the roster is that of Richie Sexson who is another perfect fit for the park and can also defend well.

Second Base - The solid play of Paul Molitor works at a few diffrent positions but the Hall of Famer will do his work at second. Molitor is one of the smartest players anyone can imagine playing and will be the main feeder at the top of the lineup. Jeff Cirillo is remembered fondly by the Brewer faithful and will get his turns as a secondary infielder for this team.

Short Stop - One of the very best ever to play at this position as well. Robin Yount by many is considered the best player on this team and his chemistry with Molitor is something fun to watch. Yount will have to drive in runs and give support to the home run men. No real backup at this position but Rickie Weeks is on the long term roster and can be used by Yount is expected to play every moment he can.

Third Base - Sal Bando by passes his time with the A's to help the Brewers become winners. Bando if anything is a winner and will bring a fine character to a team that cant afford many mistakes. Bando has some pop but cant contribute to the strike out problem this team may have. Gary Sheffield can back up at this position if needed.

Outfield - The speed of Ben Oglive will be part of this lineup and the center fielder also can hit for some pop and drive in runs, Oglive is the perfect type of player this team needs. Gary Sheffield finds a home where he started his career and will be the main figuire exepected to drive in runs in the middle of the order. Sheff has a bat as fast as anyone. Ryan Braun may be young but to his credit is already in a position to make a diffrence for this team. Braun is a confident hitter who should be watched closely. The bench is a power sourse as Gorman Thomas as Geoff Jenkins both swing for the fences and will put fear in teams as pinch hitters. Finally Sixto Lezcano rounds the roster out well and is sure to get some time to rest Oglive when needed.

Designated Hitter - The big Prince will reside in this spot with some consistent support from Sexton. Both men will be out to help Sheffield and Yount get the runs home but in this division it wont be easy with all the excellent arms. Keeping strikeouts done for Fielder and Sexton will be easier said then done. Some majestic shots should be expected however.

Starting Pitchers - With no room in LA, Don Sutton will try and carry much of the load as the ace for the Brewers. Sutton is a crafty starter who wins alot of games and should get the lead to the bullpen. Teddy Higuera could be a wild card man on this team as he could be unhittable or could miss his spots; his performance will be key. Mike Caldwell had a nice run with the Brewers in the early 80's and will have a spot to prove his worth to start the year. Caldwell in another one who cant try to do too much. Moose Haas and Ben Sheets round off the starting arms and Sheets when at his best will be the man for the job as he has more of an upside then Haas. Still Ben Sheets and his underachieving story is well known to all Brewer fans.

Closer - Facial hair isnt a problem on this team and Rollie Fingers is the leader of that catagory. More then that however Fingers is a rare closer who can go more then two innings and is expected to pitch a ton for this team. He will be depended on to get the big outs against the likes of Snider and Mays, not an easy task especially at Miller Park.

Ben Sheets vs Moose Haas (Rotation)
Cecil Fielder vs Richie Sexson (DH)

NEW YORK YANKEES

Overall (9695-7382 W-L, 1901 - 2011) - 27 World Championships, 40 Pennants, and 49 Playoff Appearances

Catchers - Only the elite make the final Yankee roster as one may imagine. The player with the most World Series rings will catch for this team as Yogi Berra can hit and field as good or better then anyone at the position. Bill Dickey was extraordinary in his own right and will give Berra a break when needed while providing a dependable bat. Not even Thurman Munson could make this starting rotation.

First Base - The Iron Horse and a true legend in every way, Lou Gehrig is the force at first base. No player has driven in runs with the pace and consistency that Gehrig can and his defense and demenour all make him perhaps the perfect Yankee. Behind him is Don Mattingly who likely wont get much of a chance to play here, but Donny will likely be very much in the mix for the designated hitter position.

Second Base - Get on base and field your position is all Tony Lazzeri needs to do and he should have no problem at it. Lazzeri is an excellent contact hitter who finds space and can beat out infield hits. He is the best small ball player on this team and an obvious winner. If needed Willie Randolph is also in the mix here; Randolph is a smart gritty player in his own right.

Short Stop - Another all around winner and captain no one had more hits then Derek Jeter. Jeter is all about the team and playing smart baseball all around, his team first attitude in everything will make this team even stronger. Derek has a great bat to the opposite field and will steal a bag when needed; he is slated to bat leadoff. The Scooter is the back up here and has a great glove, Phil Rizzuto is liked by everyone and is a good bench player on this team.

Third Base - Graig Nettles will very likely be the beneficiary of some great chances to hit as he sits in the lineup with the other giants. Nettles even more so is one of the best fielding second basemen ever and his glove will be vital. Nattles is a perfect fir for what this team needs. Red Rolfe is a strong corner man with a great bat who dips a bit defensively but can fill in for Nettles.

Outfielders - Ruth, Mantle, and Dimaggio; enough said. Everyone wants to see the Babe play and Ruth will be in his usual third spot where he will continue his persona as the best the game has ever seen. Joe Dimaggio is almost just as legendary and will be vital to this team in so many ways including his fielding. Joltin Joe is a perfect contact hitter and someone who is likely to exceed expectations with most of the attention on Ruth and Gehrig. Then of course there is the Mick, with is incredible power Mantle just makes this team even more star studded then it could be. When all is said and done the hitters in this Yankee outfield can fill shelves of books about their talents and influence. In the backup roles will be Roger Maris who is actually a teamate of Babe Ruth now after all the hype around the record. Bernie Williams is an excellent clubhouse man and player and Tommy Henrich will help out where he can.

Designated Hitter - Big Dave Winfield will get his chance to make amends for not wining the big one while playing for the Yanks as this team's primary DH. The Yanks of course will use a rotation here of a number of hitters but Winfield is expected to have an expanded role in the lineup. Mattingly will be a key man for this job as well.

Starting Pitching - The hitting is unreal but in order to win it all the Yanks will need good pitching. Whitey Ford is the man who will take the ball in the biggest games and can be dubbed the ace. Ron Guidry with his imaculate stuff is another hurler who the yanks expect to pile up the wins. Lefty Grove was the main arm to many of the great Yankee teams and will do his usual work for Joe McCarthy. The final spot will be looked at as Andy Pettitte the lefty and Red Ruffing battle it out for the final rotation slot. Pettitte has been the best of the latest Yankee generation and is likely to hold the role down.

Closer - Mariano Rivera will ease everyone's mind in the close games as he has closed more big games then anyone. Rivera is at his best it seems when the stakes are even higher and in those crucial postseason efforts its great to have him on your side. The rest of the pen may be shaky, but Rivera is the best there is.

Dave Winfield vs Don Mattingly (DH)
Andy Pettitte vs Red Ruffing (Rotation)

Quick word with Joe McCarthy
"We cant win on reputation alone. In order to be champions we need to prove it for a full season and our first goal is to win our division."

BOSTON RED SOX

Overall (8845-8255 W-L, 1901 - 2011) - 7 World Championships, 12 Pennants, and 20 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park: Fenway Park
Manager: Terry Francona

CCarlton FiskJason Varitek
1BCarl YasztremskiMo Vaughn
2BBobby DoerrDustin Pedroia
3BWade BoggsFrank Malzone
SSNomar GarciaparraJohnny Pesky
OFJim RiceMike Greenwell
OFTris SpeakerDwight Evans
OFTed WilliamsDom Dimaggio
DHDavid Ortiz
SPCy Young
SPRoger Clemens
SPPedro Martinez
SPLuis Tiant
CLJonathon Paplebon

Catchers - Carlton Fisk keeps his loyalty with Boston and will be the fulltime catcher for this team. Fisk is a scrappy team leader who brings a winning attitude perfect for the position. Fisk will also do a great job with a Hall of Fame pitching staff. Jason Varitek for many of the same reasons is the backup, he is a proven winner and a leader beyond the numbers.

First Base - Yaz defines the Red Sox in so many ways. Carl Yasztrsemski will be a star on any team and the former triple crown winner can finally do something that he and many of his mates could never do, win it all. Mo Vaughn beat out Bill Buckner for the back up job and Vaughn has a patient and proven bat that should be great to use in the late innings as a pinch hitter. No news if the infamous error cost Buckner a roster spot.

Second Base - Two very similar players again will represent second base. Bobby Doerr is a line drive hitter who plays a top notch defensive second base. Doerr is a great character man and no Red Sox team would be complete without him. One time MVP Dustin Pedroia will surely get some starts here and also has gap power and a tendency to score big runs.

Short Stop - At his very best few were better then Nomar Garciaparra. Nomar easily can hit over .320 and drive in big runs although he likely wont have a prominant spot in the lineup. Johnny Pesky is a fan favorite and belongs on this roster as well. Pesky is quick and will provide infield depth.

Third Base - The parade of Hall of Famers continues with Wade Boggs at the hot corner. Boggs will likely be near or at the top of the order and his ability to get on base is as good as it has ever been at the position. Frank Malzone is a bit of a suprize addition to the team and may be used sporatically during the long season.

OutField - The Sox tried to keep Ted Williams out of the field but in the end had no choice. Regardless Williams is of course the best right hitter in the history of the game and his presense alone makes this team a contender. Jim Rice will need to drive in runs and support Williams in the lineup. Rice may not play everyday with the likes of Dwight Evans and Mike Greenwell also available. Tris Speaker surely will be in the lineup as much as possible as the and Williams will make quite a combination. Speaker has it all at the plate and is among the greatest legends the game has seen. Dom DiMaggio also made the roster for his glove and speed, a move that had many suprized.

Designated Hitter - David Ortiz is a bat the Sox didnt want to keep out of the mix. Ortiz is one of the most clutch hitters in the history of the franchise and everyone knoes he will have his chances again. Big Papi also has a tendancy to kill the Yankees. Williams will see action in this spot as well as the season goes on or injuries happen.

Starting Pitching - This is where the Red Sox hope to differenciate themselves from the rest. A rotation that includes Cy Young at the top where inings are like water and wins like the fish in the sea. Young will head the list with Roger Clemens right behind him. The Rocket can strike out anyone and his competitiveness is perfect for this team. Pedro Martinez is also on board for the pennant push, Pedro of course when he has things going may be the best of the bunch. Other then maybe the Giants, these top three are the best anyone can claim in a rotation. Luis Tiant is expected to round things off with his big curve and huge smile. Burce Hurst will also get some consideration.

Closer - The closer role will be filled by Jonathon Paplebon who has been on the big stage for a while with success. Paplepon seems to feel no pressure and will surely have many close leads to hold especially down the stretch of the season when arms get tired. The Sox as a whole have a good pen.

Spring training battles

Bruce Hurst vs Luis Tiant (Rotation)

Quick word with Terry Francona
"Limiting the starters innings and watching pitch counts with this group will be non existant. It doesnt mean however that we wont use the right matchup at the right time to win a game."

BALTIMORE ORIOLES

Overall (8101-8983 W-L, 1901 - 2011) - 3 World Championships, 7 Pennants, and 11 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park: Camden Yards

Manager: Earl Weaver

CGus TriandosRick Dempsey
1BGeorge SislerBoog Powell
2BBrian RobertsDavey Johnson
3BBrooks RobinsonHarlond Clift
SSCal Ripken JrMark Belanger
OFFrank RobinsonAl Bumbry
OFPaul BlairNick Markakis
OFKen SingletonBrady Anderson
DHEddie Murray
SPJim Palmer
SPMike Mussina
SPDave McNally
SPMike Cuellar
CLTippy Martinez

Catchers - Not the strongest position in their history the Orioles had limited choices here. Gus Triandos had a nice career as the Oriole backtop but during his time the team didnt win, still Triandos can swing the bat a little more then his backup. The backup is Rick Dempsey who has all the intangibles at the position and is especially strong defensively. These two guys will surely splilt time and Earl Weaver will likely go with what his team needs more on a given night.

First Base - When talking about the best hitters in the history of the game, the name of George Sisler should come up. Sisler was as good as it has ever gotten at the position and the Hall Of Famer is sure to get on base almost every other time at the plate. George was the best player in St. Louis Browns history. Boog Powell has an MVP award under his belt and unlike Sisler has the pop in his bat bit not the on base average. Still the Boog fits in well on this roster and can play at DH or even in the outfield.

Second Base - Brian Roberts is the leadoff man and the speed factor that Weaver needs at the top of the lineup. Roberts is a doubled machine, a great bunter, and the best leadoff man on the roster. Davey Johnson is a good utily man to have on the roster, if not spactacular, Johnson has a capable glove and will battle at the plate.

Short Stop - Cal Ripken Jr redefined the position in many ways and was a mainstay for this team for almost 20 years. Ripken has prolific power for the position and someone who leads by example everyday. Cal is perfect for the Cooperstown League and a great flag of the game. Chances are backup Mark Belanger wont get many chances to play but his record speaks for itself and his glove espeically is something to marvel at and is as consistent as they come.

Third Base - Consistency is the name of the game here as well. Brooks Robinson manned the position through some of the best days of the franchise and his glove remains a thing of legend that lead him to the Hall of Fame. Brooks knows how to win, and his influence in this tough division. Harlond Clift is no weak link as the backup, Clift would start on almost anyother team and will likely see some action at DH. Harlond has great power and a quick bat.

Outfield - Frank Robinson will be the main bat on this team and is the kind of all around player that the game rarely sees. Robinson is an essential RBI man and a fearsome competitor. Ken Singleton had a stretch in his career where he was the best hitter in the game and finding that stroke again should be all that hard in this lineup. Paul Blair will have the other outfield spot in centerfield all to himself as he is a long beloved Oriole for life and almost a perfect fit for this team that many may be overlooking. Doubles machine Nick Markakis made this roster as did 50 home run man Brady Anderson. Al Bumbry is a nice speed option as well.

Designated Hitter - This role will be filled by the quiet greatness of Eddie Murray. Murray remains one of the best hitters with men on base and the concentration at the plate is special. Murray will have his chances surely, making a huge season for him likely. Powell and Clift can play well here as well.

Starting Pitching - A great rotation that will have the world on their shoulders. The ace is Jim Palmer who needs to prove that he is among the elite and shoot for 20 wins. Mike Mussina is another starter that will eat up innings and get outs and wins even if he doesnt do it with any flair. Mike Cuellar has the stuff to beat anyone and if he can keep his command, the Cuban will electrify. Dave McNally rounds off this rotation and winning 20 games for him seems like second nature. McNally and his talents are super and just show how deep and good this rotation really is.

Closer - Earl Weaver loves his bullpen and will have to choose between two men for this job. Tippy Martinez has the consistency and has won with the Orioles so will have the inside track at the job, Martinez can be used in all kinds of roles even prior to the 9th. Greg Olsen in the other candidate and has a nice albeit short run where he closed games better then anyone in Orioles history.

Spring Training Battles
Tippy Martinez vs Greg Olsen (Closer)
Rick Dempsey vs Gus Triandos (Catcher)

Cooperstown Rating
Hitting - A-
Defense - A-
Starting Pitching - B+
Bullpen - B
Prediction: 95-67

Quick Word with Earl Weaver
"Im not worried about if I get ejected from a game or not. My job is to manage this team, and a friendly word with an umpire is part of that."

TORONTO BLUE JAYS

Toronto Blue Jays (2698-2734 W-L, 1977 - 2011) - 2 World Championships, 2 Pennants, and 5 Playoff Appearances

Ball Park - Rogers Center
Manager: Cito Gaston

CErnie WhittPat Borders
1BCarlos DelgadoJohn Olerud
2BRoberto AlomarDamaso Garcia
3BKelly GruberEd Sprague
SSTony FernandezAlex Gonzalez
OFGeorge BellDevon White
OFShaun GreenLloyd Moseby
OFJoe CarterVernon Wells
DHFred McGriff
SPRoy Halladay
SPDave Stieb
SPDavid Wells
SPJimmy KeyPat Hentgen
CLTom Henke

Catchers - Its amazing how much talent this franchise has had in its short history, catcher however isnt one of those positions you can say that for the Jays. Ernie Whitt will get the starting chance out for the spring as he is adequete and on occasion can provide some pop. Pat Borders is a winner and makes the most of what he has to be a competent hitter at best. Both these players are looking to bring stability to the staff against some very tough opponents.

First Base - A large debate here on who should get this everyday job. Carlos Delgago is a typical power man at the corner and when hot can carry an offense. Staying healthy and keeping his strike out rate down will be a concern but the big man is an established talent. The fan favorite however is John Olerud who is very difrent at this craft. Olerud is an excellent fielder and a high average line drive hitter, fans feel they need these attributes more. The position battle will be open; also in the mix will be Fred McGriff who may see much more time as the team DH.

Second Base - Roberto Alomar makes it all look so easy both with a glove in his hand and a bat in his hand. Alomar is a Hall of Fame talent that any team would love to have and gives the Jays a large edge. Damaso Garcia is just a utility man and another dependable glove if needed in an emergency; Alomar should play in almost every inning Cito Gaston can get him to.

Short Stop - Tony Fernandez was a very good shortstop with fine range at the position, but in this league and this level he may just be average. Fernandez does posses good speed and a nice on base average but hwe may not stack up very high with the other players at this position in his division. Alex Gonzalez is another roster filler but to his credit has proven to be a clutch hitter with some power during his career.

Third Base - Kelly Gruber will have the ladies swooning with his blonde locks but will need to provide some consistency at the position. Gruber has a quick glove and is a dead fastball hitter, he wont be prominent in the lineup but will get alot of atbats as the starter. Ed Sprague is a popular backup and he has more relative third base power to speak of. Still Sprague strikes out to much and is a bit more stiff at the position to be able to play everyday.

Outfield - A true strength to this franchise, the Blue Jays have a very large group of excellent outfielders. Joe Carter is the clutch bat on this team and is really a very underated RBI machine, Carter drove in more runs in the early 90's then almost anyone. George Bell is another big bat that cant be ignored, Bell had season's where he flirted with 50 home runs and has very strong wrists to generate power. Shawn Green is slated to start in right but he may be likely playing a platoon. Green is a line drive hitter who can find the seats and produce in long stretches, on the flipside he is prone to slumping. Devon White is an excellent center fielder who can run like a deer. Vernon Wells is the best Blue Jay of the last 10 years and has all the tools you want in a player. Finally Lloyd Moseby can fill in and swing a good bat when needed.

Designated Hitter - The Crime Dog will takes his bites here. McGriff had close to 500 home runs in his career and is another great bat in this order. Of course a number of men could fill in here as well, especially John Olerud consistently. The Jays will be tough to beat if their offense reaches its best.

Starting Pitching - The rotation is quite solid and is lead by Roy Halladay who takes the reigns as the ace. Halladay has hard, excellent stuff and wont shy away from the matchup against the Boston or New York sluggers. Dave Stieb is another excellent arm on this staff and the righty induces ground balls and finds away to let his defense do the job for him. David Wells has great control and will take his turns in the rotation, Wells is confident and smart on the mound, he has proven time and time again that when he is on his best game his stuff is as good as it gets. Jimmy Key and Pat Hentgen will fight for the final spot with Key having the slight edge. Key is a winner with a wide array of pitches while Hentgen won a Cy Young but didnt last long in the league.

Closer - Not the best history of closers for this team but Tom Henke is ready to take on the challange. Henke throws hard and surely will be key as the Jays will want to close out every game they can in the toughest division of them all.

Spring Training Battle
Pat Hentgen vs Jimmy Key (Rotation)
Carlos Delgado vs John Olerud vs Fred McGriff (1st base)

Cooperstown rating
Offense - B-
Defense - B+
Starting pitching - B
Closer - C
Prediction: 79-83

Quick word with Cito Gaston
"I really like our team. We have a bunch of hard working guys with great attitudes. We just have to get the fundementals down, thats all this game comes down to, the basics."
