Relief Pitching -- Negative/Positive/No Effect?
Wondering if anyone's noticed any sort of effects on a starting pitcher when/if a manager gets someone up in the pen. Like, if my boy's gone 6 strong but walked a leadoff hitter, and I start warming up someone "just in case" -- is there some sort of psychological number in the engine somewhere that determines whether or not a pitcher's going to be offended, worried, sad, or flat out pissed off?
Can I safely have a pitcher stand up without any negative effect on the current pitcher? Also: does warming up a pitcher affect his energy? If I leave him up in the pen warming for 2 innings, will he be as fresh as if I'd thrown him in the game the moment he was warm? |

There is no effect. In fact the warm up feature is cosmetic. The AI does not use it, and you can leave a guy in the bullpen all game and he never gets tired. Most people turn this useless feature off. I guess you hadn't heard.

And here I was wasting my time worrying about whether poor Jordan Zimmerman's fragile ego could take the sight of a double-barreled bullpen warming up behind his back.
Thanks for the news. New to the game.

I haven't noticed any ill effects. I just played a game where Blake Stein gave up 7 ER and 6 BB in 3.2 IP after 4 ER in the top of the 1st i started warming Russ Ortiz up. Stein got out of the 1st. Got 2 outs in the 2nd and walked 3. I was getting ready to put Ortiz in when Stein got out of the inning. in the 3rd I waited Stein gave up 3 er and walked 1 more and got a GIDP when i replaced stein at 88 pitches. So Ortiz has been warming up since 2 outs in the 1st & came in with 2 outs in teh 3rd and finished the game. I won 10-8.
