Playing with Salary Cap
I'm a fictional league player and I want to start using a salary cap. I'm not sure of what ramifications this will have as far as setting up my finances for the league or if the default revenues/expenses will work fine. I want to start with modern day finances and I'll do manual adjustments every year or so to increase average salaries and revenue for inflation... But I'm mainly curious if there's anything I need to keep in mind when setting up a league with a salary cap. Any thoughts?

Really all it means is all teams will have a limit to their payroll. Of course if a bunch of players are eligible for arbitration you can sign them all and end up spending more than the cap, hence the term "soft cap"
I've done leagues with and without it. Personally I like MLB's system better than say, the NFLs. I like that there are small market teams and large market teams and different strategies for managing both. If every team is playing with the same $ amount it's not as interesting. IN THEORY it creates parity but I've always said a couple bad contracts can kill you. How often do you sign a big name starter and suddenly he's borderline your 5th starter? In the event of a salary cap you'd be hard pressed to trade him away since every team is more or less maxing out their budget every year. Just my two cents |
