If only the AI worked like this

One of the least remarked upon chapters in Moneyball is where Billy Beane works a trade to get Ricardo Rincon from the Indians just before the trade deadline. Sounds straightforward huh? Well, even if you've never read the book and you think 'Moneyball' is a dead or overrated concept just check out that one chapter and you will be amazed. At one point, Beane has five or six players (none of whom he controls) with the Indians, Red Sox, Expos and Giants being manipulated between them just so he can obtain Rincon's services. To allay any suspicions - because he's burnt these guys before - he randomly picks out a minor league player from the Giants farm system to add to a trade so it looks like THATS the player he really wants and at one point in the whole byzantine exercise he sees a chance to have Omar Minaya steal Kevin Youkilis from the Red Sox on his behalf (obviously it doesn't come off but its great to see how his mind works).

Beane actually doesn't have the money to pay Rincon's remaining contract for the season so he just asks Brian Sabean to throw in 250,000 dollars to one of the deals as if its an afterthought..

If ever Artificial Intelligence becomes Beane-like I don't think I would ever leave the house to stop playing this!

You should get in an online league, where I guarantee there are many fellows who will try to rip you off every day....

But then, I suppose all the players know this so trading actually has to be reasonably fair to get any deals done? What I would like to see is AI being given a Machiavellian 'character' - eventually there might be a CPU- only forum where they boast of how they repeatedly rape the human players
