Starting Fictional Game

I am setting up a fictional game that has 2 sub-leagues with 8 teams each, so 16 total teams. I just have a few questions:

#1) How many games is ideal/best for a league with just 16 teams? I originally though maybe like 82 game schedule, but then the season would only run from April-late July (w/just one round of playoffs, two league champs playing in title game)

#2) How many rounds should my draft be? It will be like MLB and have 25 man active roster and have AAA through rookie ball.

#3) If I decide to to NCAA and HS feeder leagues, how many teams should I have for each feeder league?

#4) I want to be unique and rename the awards. It's an all Florida league, so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas. I was going to go with like the best Florida pitcher and hitter and rename those two awards with their names respectively.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have the same as you: a 16 team league/2 leagues/4 divisions. I play a 120 game schedule...so my KC team plays 6 teams 17 times and one team 18 times. Works for me. I have 15 rounds in the draft and create enough players to fill 20 rounds of the draft.

I don't do feeder leagues so I don't know anything about that. Also I am only 13 seasons into my league so I am not an expert...so maybe others with longer leagues have more/better advice.

Best bet though...trial and error and make sure your league is what you want.

Thanks. I also just thought about I will have to go through and edit the capacity for the ballparks as I am doing a Florida State League, so obviously a city of 50,000 people can't have a ballpark of 45,000.

So I'm thinking making parks anywhere from 8,500-15,000 people.

I use a HS and College feeder system to feed my draft and I think it is working great. just create enough teams to fill how may rounds your draft is. There is a formula some where around here. I am at work, i will look when I get home.

If you want your parent league's first-year player draft to be fed completely by feeder leagues, you will need to do some math to determine how many feeder league teams you will need to fill out your draft class completely. Feeder leagues with 5-year age ranges (18-22, for example) typically feed 6-9 players per team to the parent league each year. Smaller age-ranges result in more players entering the draft each year. So, using the default of a 5-year age range, we calculate as follows:

  • [Number of teams in your parent league] x [Number of rounds in your first-year player draft] = total # of players needed in first-year player draft
  • [total # of players needed for draft] / 6 (rounded up) = minimum # of feeder league teams required

For example, let's say you have a 16-team major league, and a 5-round first-year player draft. You need 16 x 5, or 80 players in your first-year player draft each year. We divide 80 by 6 and round up, getting 14. If you have 14 feeder league teams, you should get enough players from your feeder leagues to populate your first-year player draft entirely with feeder league players.

Of course, it's always better to err on the side of more teams. If you end up with more players than you need for the draft, then the undrafted players will simply enter the free agent pool.

Great thanks again. I'm doing a 20 year test sim with some financial settings. Hopefully no one loses that much money.
