Rosters are a mess!!

I dont even know where to start, we have Major league players down in the gutter in GCL and im not just talking 1 per team, there are several in at least the TIgers. Like Furbush, Villareal and Wilk. Purcery who I acquried was down in one of the lower leagues and should have been in ML. Also on the main Tigers roster we have Chance Ruffin?? Who??? lol We have Oliver and Thomas in the NYP. I'd move em up but it seems 97% of the Minors is all rated 1 star. Looks like no attempt at indivually rating these guys. All these guys I listed have been on the Major league roster or Triple A this year and even a few for years, no reason for them not to be in the right league!! Very Disappointed in this!!

It's always tough to rate players so that the AI places them in the right place compared to real life. I think we got them right 95%, but the other 5% will be a work in progress in the first couple of patches.

In looking at the Braves organization there were a few players that were not at the level they started the year at, like Kawakami. I wasn't sure if that was by design or something the game did on its own.

If Albert Pujols were on the Braves and Derek Jeter were on the Orioles then I'd say rosters are a mess. Your example, is not that big of a deal in my view

Some of these cases are bound to be difficult for the roster designers; what do you do with a guy like Furbush, who was not a very heralded prospect but who made it to the majors due to a dominating AAA start to the season?

More importantly, there is a thread where specific issues regarding player ratings are asked for, and if you could help contribute knowledge of the Tigers and their lesser known players, it would be a big help. We all want to help make our game as perfect as it can be.

I am a Cardinals junkie and part of the fun of playing a 2011 Major League game on OOTP for me is adjusting obscure minor leaguers to match my perception of them. I cannot expect the dev team to accurately place and rate 150+ minor league players for every team, but that's half the fun for me. I'll spend this entire week just tinkering with the players in my OOTP universe and enjoy every second of it.

Relax buddy. The simple fact that they were able to get 150+ players with accurate names, birth dates, ages, etc. into the game for each team is impressive to say the least. In the past the MLB rosters provided with the game had just major league players and top prospects (not to mention only a few years ago the game didn't come with any preloaded rosters and you either had to do it yourself or wait for roster guys to do it).

First of all, the AI is going to interpret things a little differently than the MLB. It's impossible for it to understand that Chance Ruffin (a first round pick btw, who you dont seem to know) wouldn't be a top MLB reliever at 22. In the MLB they give a guy like Ruffin 1 or 2 years in the minors to prove himself, but that's nearly impossible to program.

As for 97 percent of players in the lower leagues being 1* guys, that's the way it is in real life also. How many players actually make it from Single A to the majors? 5 or 10? How many are starts 1 or 2? Plus the ratings are just one part of the formula. Some guys will develop into great players even as 1* guys in Single A, while some 5* guys will flame out, just like real baseball. The development engine is awesome in that respect.

SO, either take the time and make some changes you want to see or just play the game and see what happens. I bet it works out for ya'.

Yes but we're talking 1/5 of the Tigers major league roster is found down in the rookie league - to A ball level. Seems to me thats unacceptable. Major league players should be at the Major League or at least Triple A levels. Also doesnt Brennan Boesch deserve more than 1 star this year??

Well it was bound to happen. Might as well get the unhappiness about the roster out of the way now.

I'll give you that, Boesch looks underrated. He hit .250 last year with 14 homers and is hitting .295 with 10 homers already this year, while his ratings in OOTP would probably put him somewhere around .220-.235 with 15 HR. Definitely deserves a boost.

Maybe it's just my roster (I simmed one day already and let the AI mess around with the player assignments and lineups), but the only guy I see below where he should be is Brad Thomas, who is in Single A for some reason.

Try and see what happens when you sim a bit with the AI running the team.

As a Tigers fan, I find little wrong with their roster. There's minor things, but you have to expect that and they're easily fixable if you really want to. Nothing worth complaining about at all. If you want to change it, you can do it yourself.

Remember these are opening day rosters guys not current. As a Tigers fan even I have to admit we've had a ton of promotions/demotions since opening day.

I understand the frustration. However, keep in mind that the AI makes the decisions regarding initial player assignments throughout the minor league system.

Granted, perhaps some player ratings are a bit too low and have led to the AI assigning players well down the minor league hierarchy. But keep in mind that the rosters are always a moving target. If you've ever picked up a baseball preview publication, you'll know that these are typically produced in January and February, and their projected rosters and system assignments end up being quite different from what plays out during and after spring training.

I would imagine that OOTP rosters are similar in that the process of defining them begins early, probably well before the season, and the minor league ratings are based in large part on how players were graded and where they were assigned for the previous year. It's very difficult to project who's going to make a huge leap from single A to triple A or who is going to suddenly emerge from mediocrity and become an immediate contributor at the Major League level. And it's very difficult to really discern between minor league prospects in terms of their overall quality and potential.

As an avid Tigers fan, ask yourself: did you know that some of these guys were going to be called up this year and become significant players in Detroit? Did you know how good they would be? Were the Detroit media hyping these guys and predicting their rapid ascent? The answer to all of these is probably no.

Actually and I'm not trying to toot my own horn here at all, but if I remember correctly there are over 36,000 players just in the minors add to that MLB and another 3,000+ Free Agents, that we have to try and get correct.
That includes:
Names
Dates
Uniform #
Contracts
Disabled/suspended etc.
Histories
Place of birth
stats for minors
service time
team assigned to
on mlb 40 man roster.
player ratings.
and the list goes on and on...there are only a handful of us that do this and we have a very short time limit to get it done. Sometimes things happen between here and there, but if there are errors, they'll get fixed...may be a patch or 2, but they'll get fixed..
Hope this explains why they may be an error or 2 here and there...
Enjoy...
