Any tips?

I absolutley love this game! Thank you for releasing this on the ipod, I am currently 29 games in with my Jays with a record of 9-20! My starters are getting absolutley pounded. I have a few questions below that perhaps someone could answer to help me out.

1. Against power hitters should I always set my outfield deep?
2. Should I be taking pitches every at bat to work the count in my favour?
3. Will players be more productive if they are placed higher in the order? Jayson Nix is batting 100 and I usually put him in the 7 or 8 hole.

Anything else you would like to add is much appreciated.

Normally you set your OF deep to avoid Extra Base Hits. For example with a close lead and late in the game you can use that strategy to avoid a (possible tying run) base runner reach 2B.

I would not use it that often, maybe with a good On-Base batter to get a few extra pitches out of a starter so he has to leave the game early.

You could write books (wait, people wrote books about it ) about lineup construction. Generally speaking, batter will not perform better if they are higher in the lineup BUT make sure to check the role expectation of a player. If you have a guy who wants to play "top of the lineup" and you put him on 8 he might become angry -> his performance might be going down -> even the team performance might be effected.

So when should someone use the "take the pitch" button instead of "swing"?

Any time the opposing starter has "low" control (I consider 11 or lower to be "low) and/or low stamina I will take pitches on purpose. Depending on how bad their control/stamina and how good my batter's contact/eye I will even take up to 2 strikes. Obviously this doesn't work great if your hitters can't be expected to do well with 2 strikes. On the other hand this is a great way to get starters out of the game by the 6th or 7th inning, and also works great vs. bullpens. It's more worth it to do this the opening game of a series to make the other team deplete their 'pen for the following games.

I've won several games in extra innings because the opposing team had to stick with tired relievers while I still had fresh arms. It really helps that I have two long-men on the roster to soak up those extra inning games, or fill in when a starter gets bombed (or injured, or ejected!)

PS it's also a good idea to take 1 or 2 pitches if you have an obvious base-stealer on first. The CPU is pretty likely to pitch-out or attempt a pick-off in the first two pitches of an at-bat. If the count is 1-0, 1-1, or 2-0 they're much less likely to try, thus it's safer to steal or run & hit.
