Troy Tulowitzki
After watching MLB tonight it occured to me... is a Tulowitzki style deal plausible in OOTP?
He had 4 years on his contract when he received an extension. I dunno if I ever was able to talk to a player about resigning who wasn't in their final year. Is it possible? |

Would be a great feature...
You can talk to a player with 2 years remaining on the deal (current year and next year). I sign players routinely like that. |

I've never tried with a player, but personnel will sign extensions (maybe only a year) no matter how many years are left on their contracts. I've extended a super-scout by three extra years when he still had five years remaining.

I hate to say it, but a feature like this really would likely have an adverse effect, and provide a significant advantage for the player over the AI.

Sort of like a sign-and-trade in basketball?

Boston did this to Aroyo? (I don't know how to spell his name) 3-5 seasons ago. He signed a favorable contract and they dealt him. I don't remember how long they waited but I don't think it was more than 1/2 a season.

In my fictional league the yanks (who had like 5 straight HORRID cellar finishes) had an amazing pitcher, Paul Eberly. They resign him to a 7 year extension and a day later traded him to the powerhouse Pirates for 2 bad prospects with no ceiling. Was quite annoyed to see it.

Was the extension part of a restructuring of the contract? I am not sure if it will make it to OOTP and rules a few years ago made restructuring more difficult but it was common in the 1990's. The Houston Astros owed Bagwell big time after he retired due to deferring payments and restructuring so they could have some budget room. As a GM I would like to have this option but I am not sure I would want to see what the AI would do with it.

I think I remember seeing something about this year's game having something like that. Maybe multiple option years IIRC.
