Pitch vs Pitch Around

Is it my imagination or am I getting much better results using pitch around vs pitch when in game? My results seem so much better that I am now almost exclusively use pitch around. The only time I am using pitch is if the batter has fairly poor EYE ratings or the pitcher has extraordinarily high STUFF or MOVEMENT. I hesitated to use pitch around when the pitcher has poor control but it seems to work even with poor control pitchers.

So do most people use pitch around or pitch when playing games? When do you use pitch rather than pitch around?

BTW, I am using OOTP8.

I use Pitch around maybe 1-2 times per game...In a recent game I was playing their #3 hitter was batting .414 3 hr 12 rbi while their #4 hitter was batting .269 0 hr 6 rbi I pit6ch around the #3 hitter 1st time he grounded out to the 2B, 2nd time with runners on the corners 1 out h slapped it up the middle and my SS bobbled the ball for an error.

Pitch around was very effective in Versions 2006/2007/8. I never had problems with too many walks.

This has been fixed in the newer versions.

Must say my experience with OOTP11 is that Pitch Around almost always ends in a walk or single. This is my experience playing out every game in one-pitch mode for more than two seasons. I rarely use pitch around because it seems, like clockwork, I'll walk the guy or let up a hit. Abeit not a homerun but still. Also, Hold Runners tends to allow a hit as well.

These are my observations and I'm sure its not a bug - just my bad luck.

I stated earlier that I use it often and have success with it. the 2 times I used it last game i played players got a hit up teh middle and grounded out.

I have been playing a little more and watched the results closely. I do see more walks with pitch around but also a wide array of results including homeruns. I think one major disadvantage of using pitch around is my pitch count goes too high, too quickly. I am noticing most of my pitchers are approaching a 100 pitches in the 6th inning. So I am reducing my use of the pitch to the obvious situations with the intention of reducing my pitch count.

I use "Pitch Around" in situations where there are men on base and the batter is a power hitter, I guess in my thinking it would be better to allow a walk or single than for the power hitter to put one up in the stands.

+1, that's how I use it too.

I'm not a big fan of the intentional walk, so I'll use Pitch Around a lot when first base is open and it's an ideal intentional walk situation. Usually will end up walking the guy anyway, but sometimes you can induce a strikeout, pop-out or a harmless grounder by pitching around if your pitcher is going well. Still will use intentional walk if the hitter absolutely terrifies me .

I had runners on 1st & 3rd Frank Tomas coming up batting .438 9hr 24 rbi. my closer is on the mound struggling. I have a 1 run lead at home bottom of the 9th 2 outs. I know the 6th place hitter coming up after Thomas hits lefties at a .220 clip and my closer is a lefty. I pitch around Frank Thomas for a BB which was fine with me the 6th hitter strikes out. I win 4-3.
What I was hoping for by doing a P/A to Thomas was that he is slow as was the runner at 1B. So either my defense would have thrown Frank out at 1B, or thrown the runner out at 2B.
Since this thread has started i have used the P/A more then I have in the past and I have yet to get burned for doing so. It has worked 7 of 7 times in 5 games.

Don't be surprised when despite your best efforts using pitch around, the batter knocks it out of the ballpark. I have used pitch around on several batters that hit homeruns. Some players, like Pujal, it is best just to intentionally walk under the right circumstances rather than risk even the pitch around.

It happens IRL too. You tell a pitcher to give somebody nothing to hit, and he leaves one out over the plate, and the batter hits hit a mile.
