Please Help

OK folks...I need some advice.. I realize and have read all the other threads on Wallman's Utility. Tried all the suggestions. I spent more than half of this day trying to make this thing work. Downloaded and installed 3 different versions of Java and removed them when they didn't work. I used 1.0.4, 1.0.4_02, and 1.0.4_03. I get the same result every time. Maybe I am doing something wrong..It seems to go off without a hitch until I am creating HTML pages. It gets as far as PLAYERID: 1006, and then it just disappears off my screen. When I go in to see what worked and didn't, none of the team pages are generated, and many of the player pages aren't generated. But it looks like minor league stats, playoff stats, All Star designations, and player infos are all working ok. Does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong? Any suggestions? I have never wanted anything to work so bad in my life! I also enable the Generate All option.. Please give me some good advice.. Windows XP is my OS..thanks in advance..

Hmm...

Okay, I assume you uninstalled the Java stuff before installing other versions? And checked to make sure it was really gone?

Did you just download the JRE of 1.4.0?

thanks for the reply Drood..Yes..I just d/l the JRE part of 1.4, and yes, I confirmed that the old ones were gone before I proceeded. I posted this message 24 hours ago and it has been viewed by 43 people as of this posting. It amazes me how much help is available on this forum but I have had only one reply. Watch those replies come now criticizing me. Thanks for the reply Drood..

I don't know what you are expecting, this is a support group for OOTP, but many fine people have shown their willingness to help out OOTP users having problems with add-ons, hell, even system issues. If I were you I would assume that someone else who could help you has simply not yet read your post yet.

It sounds like this probably is an issue with your OS to me, although Ryan would probably be able to answer that better than I. Try going to Start-->Run and then type msconfig and then uncheck everything but your anti-virus. When you boot back up, disable your anti-virus and try running the program again.

Killebrew, I know what this is a support group for. Maybe that's why you should take your parenting skills to a group for parents. This forum is for anything having to do with OOTP. If what you have to say is not designed to help me, please refrain from scolding me. By the way, helpful guy, got any suggestions for my Wallman's dilemma??

Cooley.. I have learned alot from you on this forum over the last few years. My original post was very nice..I commented to Drood that I was surprised that out of 43 people looking at my post, none had any advice. THAT'S ALL...Killebrew wanted to scold me for that and I thought THAT was totally unnecessary. He caught attitude with me first. The people on this forum are incredibly helpful and I am very much appreciative, but some are quicker to police than to help, and that bothers me. I could see if he was being constructive with his input, but frankly after literally hours of attempting to get Wallmans working on my computer for the second weekend in a row, I was not receptive to Killebrew's post out of boredom.

I'm here.. but I don't know the answer..

It sounds like something is wrong with player 1006's entry in the database that Ryan's utility uses. You might want to check this out in the database if you have a version of Microsoft Access

The only suggestion I would have would be to go through and parse all the players over again and hope that corrects the problems.

Normally the utility produces a fairly thorough error message when it runs into problems (telling you the piece of code and line number where the fault is)... in this case I suspect its bombing before you can see the error message.

I am not familiar with Windows XP and I am not Ryan, so I don't know all the ins and outs of his program, so all I can give you are my best guesses.

I'm sorry you didn't get the help you were seeking earlier, but I suspect it was not a matter of people not wanting to help you, but simply that people don't know the answer and rather than steering you in the wrong direction with what might not have been the good advice you sought, they elected to hope that someone else knew the right answer.

Scott..thanks so much for your help.. I can't wait to get this thing working..It is an awesome utility isn't it! I knew that it wasn't a matter of people "not wanting to be helpful", but just couldn't believe that many people had looked at my post and nobody had any ideas..I know very well how helpful you guys can be..I have been around this forum for a long time. And if i was a little too touchy toward Killebrew, I extend my apologies.

You just have to figure that while alot of people may use this program, not a lot of them probably know how it interacts with Java. I have found that waiting a couple of hours is not always enough on this board. When I post looking for help, I usually give 24 hours before expecting an answer. This way, all of the "people in the know" will have a chance to look at my post.

Now, to your problem... Just a couple of suggestions..

1. Completly uninstall and delete Wallmans utility.
2. Completly uninstall Java.
3. Check in your add/remove section to make sure that all versions of Java are uninstalled.
4. Download and install Java version 1.4.0
5. Download and install version 1 of Wallmans utility
6. Download and install version 2 of Wallmans utility over version 1.

Hopefully this will work, but who knows. There might be something with your computer hanging this up. Hopefully someone will be able to give you more exact answers.

Daniel,
You must take into account lurkers as well. The Q you posted really isn't an OOTP game issue rather a utility issue and not everyone here is having problems with the utility or even uses it. Follow fantom's suggesstion or read through this post http://www.400softwarestudios.com/bo...threadid=19831 for some others. Good luck, I was having the same problem and the instructions fantom posted corrected it.

Another possibility. Could it be a service running on XP screwing it up? I know Sun and MS fell out over Java, so they may have taken a somewhat lax attitude toward breaking it... Just a thought, though I have NO idea what service could be screw it up.

The anti-virus is a thought. Anything else? Not running Zone Alarm by any chance are you? Had HEINOUS stability problems with that.

Maybe head to www.blkviper.com and check his services page for XP. If nothing else, unless you've done it already, there's a pile of stuff you can turn off listed there and gain performance anyway, so it's worth the trip.

danielb - I was not scolding you in my post, nor was I posting out of boredom. You were getting upset that nobody had been helping you - if I could have I would have.

"It amazes me how much help is available on this forum but I have had only one reply. "
My reply was simply an explanation of why there had not been more help offered at that point. If there was attitude passed on it was completely unintentional and perhaps with "Watch those replies come now criticizing me." you might have percieved my words to be harsher than they really were. Think of it as a call for patience not a scolding (& hey, no hard feelings either).
