Farewell Coach Sloan

Big news here in Utah - Coach Sloan is leaving the Utah Jazz as the 3rd winningest NBA coach of all-time (1221 wins) and the longest tenured coach in the NBA (Since 1988).

Sad day for us Jazz fans!
Reports: Jerry Sloan to resign as coach of Utah Jazz - ESPN

Didn't he just sign an extension on Monday?

Who does that leave as the longest tenured coach now?

Yeah, that is the crazy part. He just signed a one (1) year extension and now is gone. Rumours around here is that he and D-Will got into it during half time of last night's game. Serious power struggle between the two of them.

If Williams is indeed at the root of why he's leaving, I wonder if he'll become persona non grata in Utah.

They'll ban him from Salt Lake City's 49,167 pawn shops.

Id highly doubt any player could cause a coach of Sloans stature to re-sign. Id guess it was with ownership. Players/coaches get into it all the time.

Possibly, although it seems over the past few years if there's a choice between player and coach, the coach always loses. Maybe ownership told him that Deron > him.

If so they're fools. Even though it's the players people pay to see, I still don't understand why a coach of Jerry Sloan's caliber didn't get the benefit of the doubt in this case. You can always find another point guard, but there's only one Jerry Sloan.

Well the post-Sloan era has begun on a whimper. The Jazz came out hot in the first quarter against the Suns, looked like they were going to run away with it, but in the end lost. There are little bits and pieces coming out in the local media, all which points to a continued struggle between Coach Sloan and D-Will. The general consensus is that Coach just got tired of it and said screw it, I'm done. While the conflict/fights are not a new thing for a Coach Sloan team (Malone, Ostertag, Morris, etc…), I think his age and the ongoing battle was enough to make him leave.

So true! He will be missed around here. The guy is a legend in the community - he has been the face of the Jazz for more than two decades. It would not surprise me if the Jazz put up a statue out in front of the Delta Center (don't like the new name) right next to Stockton and Malone.

Does that mean you would, or you wouldn;t be surprised if they do? That double negative in that sentence has me confused.....

lol - Yeah, my bad. Let's just forget all of that and let me say that I fully expect a Coach Sloan statue to find its way in front of the Delta Center.

Now CH wants a statute instead of a statue.

What is going on in Utah? Usually the most class team in the league.

This implies that Jazz ownership was upset with Williams for driving Sloan to quit. Which is certainly understandable. I hope Deron enjoys being on a bad team.
