Is defense overrated?

Is defense overrated? Can you win with good starting pitching and average to below average defense throughout the field?

No defense is still probably slightly underrated. However, OOTP does not age defense very well. I can have a CF who gets two knee injuries, and still remain a stud CF, despite losses in speed and hitting ability. All his other ratings are all but crippled.

As for your question I guess. Yeah, good pitchers can do well with/without good defense, if they walk very little, strike out many, keep balls in the park. Obviously pitchers who have a high GB% benefit/get hurt by infield defense more, and vice versa with fly ballers and OF defense.

Park factors matter too!

How do I know how my parks are whether pitcher-friendly or hitter-friendly?

In the Team menu, the last item is Team Options & Ballpark Info. Select it. The right hand side of the screen lists the ballpark factors. Assuming the ballpark factors are balanced for your league, the items with a value > 1 are more likely than the average ballpark to occur. The items with a value < 1 are less likely than the average ballpark to occur.

Yes. It is overrated. You can do well without it

Honestly, it kind of depends on the other teams in your league.

If it's an online league where a lot of other owners put a premium on defense, if you don't, you're going to fall behind.

Right, in the same way you can do well without a good offense, or good pitching. But punting anyone one of the three is a recipe for disaster.

That's pretty much the case.

For my Chicago Fire I have stellar Defense in teh IF & OF but especially up the middle, My SS def ratings r 10 and he has a GG, My 2B has won a GG in LF, 3B, & SS and my CF has 5 GG (3CF 2SS) I also have a great young def 3B, my C sucks though no matter who I have behind teh plate but I have 3 SP that have a knuckleball with other pitches, I have lead the league in SB vs me each of the last 4 yrs. Right now my OF ers lead overall in assists.

After recently losing a game in the 12th inning due to my relievers inability to flip the ball to first base with accuracy, it's safe to say defense is not overrated.

Don't worry about it. Your posts per day is less than the plaintiff.
