Injured Player

I have a player who is injured with a broken kneecap and will be out 8 - 9 months. The 60 DL of course will not cover this time period. Not sure how to handle this. Should I demote him to the minors? Any Suggestions?

Thanks,

JP

You need to put him on the DL regardless, if you don't want to take up an active roster spot for 8 or 9 months. Choose the 60-day time period, as that gives you an added slot on your 40-man roster (the 15-day DL does not). What happens is, the player stays on the DL after the 60 days are up, until he has fully healed. Only then will you be able to take him off the disabled list.

My pleasure. By the way, it also works in reverse. Whichever is longer, injury or official DL time, governs how long the player is out.

That is, say your guy was injured for "eight weeks" and it turns out to be quite literal; that is, the player is healthy again after only 56 days. Even though he's now recovered, if he was placed on the 60-day DL, he must stay on there for another 4 days before you can reactivate him.

That left me in an interesting position in mid-August (with 9/1 being the roster expansion). My backup shortstop got hurt for 1-2 weeks and I needed a backup with a good glove for some big games, so I put him on the DL and called one up from AAA. The injured backup ended up spending three healthy days on the DL, but when he was ready the rosters were bigger and I could keep both.

It cost me three days of a good backup, but it worked out better in the long run for me.
